The 5-point difference is not statistically significant and contrasts with a clear Israeli lead in previous years (e.g., Israelis ahead 46% to 33% a year earlier).

– Past trend: From 2001 to 2018, Israelis consistently led in americans’ Middle East sympathies by large margins. The gap began narrowing in 2019, before the Hamas attack in October 2023 and the ensuing Gaza war.

– Geographic and political context: 46% view Israel favorably,37% view the Palestinian Territories favorably. 57% support a separate Palestinian state. The shift in sympathy is strongly linked to partisan affiliation.

– Partisan splits: About 70% of Republicans favor Israelis, 13% palestinians. Among Democrats, 65% sympathize with Palestinians and 17% with Israelis. independents show a split favorable to Palestinians (41%) over Israelis (30%), with independents increasingly viewing the Palestinians similarly to israelis.

– Religious and cultural factors: Evangelicals show strong support for Israel (about 69% say Israel’s right to the land extends to biblical borders). Pew data and other sources note Christians’ views influence political leanings, with various denominations showing different levels of support for Israel.

– Biblical framing: The article discusses how some Christians’ support for Israel stems from biblical narratives (e.g., Genesis 12) and prophecies, and cites perspectives that see Israel’s restoration as a fulfillment of biblical promises.

– Public opinion on peace and resolution: A significant portion of Americans favor a two-state approach, with many supporting a separate Palestinian state, alongside considerable numbers who remain undecided or hold mixed views.

– Extra context: The piece includes quotes and references from sources and commentators who frame the issue in religious and prophetic terms, highlighting how faith-based beliefs can shape political attitudes.

In short, the article highlights a notable shift in American sympathy—from a historically Israel-leaning public to a more balanced or Palestinians-leaning stance—driven by partisan, religious, and cultural factors, while also noting ongoing support for potential peace arrangements.

A new poll published on Friday shows that Americans sympathize more with Palestinians than Israelis.

There is a wide disparity between Republicans, Democrats, and independents, and the question is, why?

The answer is, it’s a matter of faith.

“Forty-one percent of Americans now say they sympathize more with the Palestinians in the Middle East situation, while 36% sympathize more with the Israelis.
