They argue that House members shouldn\u2019t dictate Senate procedure and warn that a \u201ctalking filibuster\u201d\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >prolonged floor speech designed<\/a> to block a bill\u2014could backfire if Democrats gain power. While Republicans broadly support election security, they are reluctant to abandon the filibuster, and there is not a unified stance within the party on how to proceed. They aren&rsquo;t going to tell us how we&rsquo;re going to run the Senate,&rdquo; Senate Majority Leader <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-thune\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"178\">John Thune<\/a> (R-SD) told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a product and a function of the social media world we live in, and there&rsquo;s an ecosystem out there&hellip; that creates an echo chamber,&rdquo; he later added to reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership member Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/shelley-moore-capito\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3216\">Shelley Moore Capito<\/a> (R-WV), herself a former House member, said the pressure isn&rsquo;t &ldquo;having any kind of an impact&rdquo; on their plans and that the upper chamber is &ldquo;going to do what we&rsquo;re going to do.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I prefer that they&rsquo;ll handle their crew, and we&rsquo;ll handle the Senate business,&rdquo; added Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-rounds\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4908\">Mike Rounds<\/a> (R-SD).<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump reignited <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4465730\/maga-backlash-thune-save-act-filibuster\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4465730\/maga-backlash-thune-save-act-filibuster\/\">conservative anger<\/a> over the Senate&rsquo;s failure to act on the SAVE Act by calling for its immediate passage during his State of the Union address this week. The bill would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have to stop it, John,&rdquo; Trump said of alleged voter fraud, making a subtle jab at Thune.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are unanimous in their belief that the proposal would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/law-firm-sues-michigan-secretary-of-state-for-leaving-25000-dead-registrants-on-voter-rolls\/\" title=\"Law Firm Sues Michigan Secretary of State for Leaving 25,000 Dead Registrants on ...r Rolls\">bolster election security<\/a>. Yet, they are unwilling to skirt the filibuster, which only requires a lawmaker to express opposition to a bill before 60 votes are required to advance the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>A talking filibuster, in comparison, requires lawmakers opposing a bill to speak on the Senate floor for as long as possible. Once all lawmakers yield and amendments are voted on, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/an-unconstitutional-invasion-republican-senators-to-challenge-biden-vaccine-mandate-report\/\" title=\"\u2018An Unconstitutional Invasion\u2019: Republican ...ators To Challenge Biden Vaccine Mandate: Report\">simple-majority vote<\/a> is needed to advance legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, who currently have a 53-47 majority, say a talking filibuster could be weaponized against them if Democrats seize power. Thune has also noted his members are not &ldquo;unified&rdquo; around the strategy, which would also require at least 50 Republicans to vote in lockstep against an unlimited number of Democratic amendments.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., joined by Sen. (AP Photo\/Mark Schiefelbein)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, the concerns over logistics haven&rsquo;t stopped Republican rebels in the House, like Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/anna-paulina-luna\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11243\">Anna Paulina Luna <\/a>(R-FL), and Senate hardliners such as Sens. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-lee\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"684\">Mike Lee<\/a> (R-UT) and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rick-scott\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1989\">Rick Scott<\/a> (R-FL), from demanding Thune take action. Thune has not asked House Speaker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"7043\">Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA) to tamp down SAVE Act criticism among his members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The outside voices &mdash; we welcome them, we appreciate the, as I said, all the advice and encouragement we&rsquo;re getting,&rdquo; Thune said. &ldquo;We have to try and execute here in a way that gets us results.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4465730\/maga-backlash-thune-save-act-filibuster\/\">MAGA RIGHT SOURS ON THUNE OVER SAVE ACT FIGHT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even the mere prospect of a talking filibuster has caused retiring Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/thom-tillis\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"973\">Thom Tillis<\/a> (R-NC), who supports the SAVE Act, to be one of the few Republicans to leave his name off as a co-sponsor.
