He described himself as a moderate Democrat and noted his past acquaintance with Donald Trump. Smith praised Rubio\u2014calling him an adult in teh room and highlighting Rubio\u2019s credentials as a former senator and the present secretary of state and national security adviser\u2014as reasons he might support Rubio if he doesn\u2019t run. He contrasted Rubio with JD Vance, whom he views as aspiring to Trump-like populism rather than getting work done. Even though Smith said he\u2019s unlikely to run for president in 2028,the weak Democratic field makes the possibility tempting. The remarks followed Smith\u2019s critique of Congressional Democrats for being \u201cplayed like a fiddle\u201d at the State of the Union after Trump challenged them on <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >protecting citizens versus illegal immigration<\/a>. This man is a former senator, he&rsquo;s the present secretary of state, he&rsquo;s the national security adviser. He&rsquo;s an adult in the room.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While offering praise for Rubio, Smith had a very different opinion about&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jd-vance\/\">Vice President&nbsp;J.D.&nbsp;Vance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I look at&nbsp;J.D.&nbsp;Vance and I see somebody that aspires to be Trumpish, engaging in populism as opposed to actually getting the work done,&rdquo; said Smith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Smith, for his part, said he was unlikely to run for president in 2028, but the notion was tempting given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-kari-lake-plans-to-circumvent-feds-on-border-policy-through-an-interstate-compact\/\" title=\"Exclusive \u2014 Kari Lake Plans to Circumvent Feds on Border Policy Through an Inter...
