(Photo by ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Janatan Sayeh, a research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that &ldquo;there is value in keeping cards close to the chest when the stakes are this high.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On the domestic front, prematurely signaling anything, positive or negative, can trigger backlash and complicate decision-making,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;Ambiguity is something both sides have leveraged during talks. Small details can carry major implications, especially when negotiations stall over highly technical issues.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During his <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/state-of-the-union\/\">State of the Union address<\/a>, Trump reiterated his &ldquo;preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy [with Iran]&rdquo; but affirmed that he will &ldquo;never allow the world&rsquo;s No. 1 sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are in negotiations with them,&rdquo; Trump said in the Tuesday address. &ldquo;They want to make a deal, but we haven&rsquo;t heard those secret words: &lsquo;We will never have a nuclear weapon.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4470932\/trump-praises-marco-rubio-best-secretary-of-state\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4470932\/trump-praises-marco-rubio-best-secretary-of-state\/\"><strong>MARCO RUBIO GETS HIS FLOWERS AS TRUMP PRAISES &lsquo;BEST-EVER&rsquo; SECRETARY OF STATE DURING STATE OF THE UNION<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kelanic told <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the&nbsp;<\/span><em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that &ldquo;some of the more fatalistic analysts&rdquo; were concerned heading into the State of the Union that Trump could actually use the opportunity to &ldquo;announce the start of a U.S. attack on Iran.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>U.S. diplomats are slated to meet with their Iranian counterparts again on Thursday. The talks, held in Geneva, Switzerland, are aimed at forging an agreement that sufficiently disempowers the Islamic Republic from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-march-to-appeasement\/\" title=\"The March to Appeasement\">acquiring nuclear weapons<\/a>. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Special envoys for peace,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/steve-witkoff\/\">Steve Witkoff&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jared-kushner\/\">Jared Kushner,<\/a>&nbsp;are heading the mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vice President JD Vance explicitly threatened the use of military force against the regime if they fail to &ldquo;take [negotiations] seriously&rdquo; this week.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think the Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] and everybody in their system should understand that we&rsquo;ve been crystal clear, and we&rsquo;re hopeful that we&rsquo;re able to come to a good resolution without the military, but if we have to use the military, the president, of course, has that right as well,&rdquo; Vance <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4471781\/vance-iran-take-nuclear-negotiations-seriously\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jared Kushner, left, and Steve Witkoff walk in the corridors  during the 56th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, WEF, in Davos, Switzerland, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026. But with aircraft carriers and other military vessels <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4468569\/trump-iran-buildup-state-union-address\/\">gathering in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the Iranian leaders don&rsquo;t have much of a choice but to sit down at the table.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Right now, the Islamic Republic is at the<em>&nbsp;<\/em>literal&nbsp;barrel of a gun &mdash; and it&rsquo;s still talking, which demonstrates the regime&rsquo;s willingness to compromise to avoid war,&rdquo; Kelanic told <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the&nbsp;<em>Washington Examiner<\/em><\/span>. &ldquo;The problem is trusting the U.S. is hard, and Trump&rsquo;s military buildup, coupled with his sometimes-talk of regime change, has so rattled the Iranians that they fear the U.S. plans to attack regardless of any concessions offered, which isn&rsquo;t conducive to agreement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">She speculated that&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-on-defense\/4467177\/trump-ratchets-up-pressure-on-iran-both-sides-seek-off-ramp\/\">dialing down the pressure<\/a>&nbsp;on Iran and paring back the massive buildup of troops off the coast could help convince the regime that the administration is negotiating in good faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sayeh is more hawkish, telling the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that pressure must continue to be applied as &ldquo;no Western approach has <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >produced sustained behavioral change&#038;rdquo<\/a>; from the regime.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Sanctions, maximum pressure, the killing of Soleimani, and operations like Midnight Hammer have weakened regime capabilities but have not altered its core ambitions. Tehran has repeatedly framed compromise as weakness, particularly during moments of vulnerability,&rdquo; Sayeh explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4471271\/narendra-modi-lands-israel-peak-iran-tensions-suggesting-strike-delay\/\">NARENDRA MODI LANDS IN ISRAEL DURING PEAK OF IRAN TENSIONS, SUGGESTING STRIKE DELAY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He continued: &ldquo;Weakening the regime is not the same as moderating it.
