After a low of about $2.79 in mid-January, prices climbed to roughly $2.88 by late January, dipped to $2.875 at the start of February,and have inched up since,rising about 10 cents in February and more than 18 cents since the February low.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the recent increase, prices are down versus a year ago according to AAA, and remain the lowest as may 2021 per the U.S. Energy Information Administration, though not back to pre-2021 levels. There is <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >significant regional variation<\/a>: 38 states are under $3 per gallon, while the West Coast tends to be the most expensive. California currently tops the list at about $4.63 per gallon,with Hawaii and Washington also high (around $4.41 and $4.36, respectively). On Wednesday, the national average cost of regular gas is $2.975 per gallon, nearly 4% higher than a month ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After hitting a Trump 2.0-era low of $2.79 per gallon on Jan. 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jen-psaki-is-a-lying-liar-who-lies-insane-gas-prices-edition\/\" title=\"Jen Psaki Is A Lying Liar Who Lies: Insane ... Edition\">gas prices began<\/a> to rise slowly. Toward the end of January, the national average for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4442549\/gas-prices-slight-increase-at-the-pumps-to-begin-february\/\">regular gas rose to $2.88 per gallon<\/a> before dropping to $2.875 at the start of February. With less than a week remaining in the month, fuel costs have increased by a dime since the beginning of February and by over 18 cents since <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4414350\/gas-prices-national-average-falls-to-2-79-per-gallon-for-first-time-in-nearly-five-years\/\">reaching $2.79 per gallon<\/a>. However, there&rsquo;s been a steady increase over the last 44 days, and gas prices are not headed in the right direction. Yet, even with this increase, the national average price for regular gas is still at its lowest level since May 2021, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&amp;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&amp;f=a\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a>. Fuel costs have remained considerably lower than when former President Joe Biden was in office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After years of expensive gas prices during <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\/\">Biden<\/a>&rsquo;s term, people have experienced relief at the pumps during Trump&rsquo;s second term. While Biden was in office, the national average for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gas-prices-nearly-4-more-expensive-than-a-month-ago\/\" title=\"...: Nearly 4% more expensive than a ...\">gas prices regularly exceeded <\/a> per gallon. Moreover, during his four years in office, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.555, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&amp;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&amp;f=a\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a>. This includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gas-prices-national-average-falls-to-2-79-per-gallon-for-first-time-in-nearly-five-years\/\" title=\"...: ... falls to ....79 per gallon for first time in nearly five years\">highest yearly average<\/a> for a gallon of regular gasoline in U.S. history, at $4.059 in 2022, and the highest monthly average in history, at <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/leafhandler.ashx?f=m&amp;n=pet&amp;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg\">$5.032 per gallon in June 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 38 states have average gas prices under $3 per gallon. In the second week of January, 43 states fell below that price point. Nevertheless, fuel prices vary by region, with the West Coast typically having the highest gas prices in the nation. For the last two years, the lowest gas prices were usually found in states along the Gulf Coast or in adjacent states, such as Oklahoma. That has changed in recent months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4469985\/schumer-trump-make-its-case-rubio-briefing-iran\/\">SCHUMER SAYS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION MUST &lsquo;MAKE ITS CASE&rsquo; AFTER RUBIO BRIEFING ON IRAN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California is once again the state with the highest gas prices in the country, a title it has held for most of the last two years. In 2026, however, gas prices dropped in the Golden State, beginning in February, when the statewide average cost of a gallon of regular gas fell to $4.355. Today, a gallon of regular gas in California costs $4.634. Hawaii, which was the state with the most expensive gas prices in the nation at the beginning of February, is now second, with a cost of $4.406 per gallon. Washington state is next with an average price of $4.359 per gallon, followed by Oregon at $3.923 and Nevada at $3.704.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma has the lowest gas prices in the country, with an average price of $2.405 per gallon. This is an increase from last week&rsquo;s price of $2.291. Mississippi is the second-least-expensive state for gas prices, at $2.523 per gallon.
