The European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom said they would wait for the administration’s actual policy moves before celebrating and stressed the importance of stability and lower tariffs. The EU noted that the ruling affects its 15% reciprocal tariff but emphasized the need for clarity on the next steps. Canada said the tariffs were unjustified and signaled forthcoming talks with the U.S. on steel, aluminum, and automotive tariffs still in place. The U.K. argued the priority remains reducing tariffs and maintaining its favorable trading position, urging continued negotiations. Separately, President Trump announced a new 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, while preserving existing national-security tariffs under Section 232 and Section 301, and said he would launch further investigations to pursue fair tariffs. He also claimed the ruling was influenced by foreign interests.

US trade partners proceed with caution as they wait for Trump’s tariff pivot after Supreme Court decision

The United States’s global trade partners had their ears to the door on Friday, responding quickly after the Supreme Court decided to strike down President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.

From the European Union to neighboring Canada, U.S. trade partners responded with cautious optimism to the ruling that invalidated tariffs made with the International Emergency Economic Powers Act on Friday.
