Ro Khanna of California and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. After viewing the unredacted files at the Department of Justice, they announced on the House floor that six redacted names appeared too be implicated in how the files were presented, and Khanna read the names into the Congressional Record, invoking the Speech or Debate Clause to un-redact them publicly.

The piece explains that, according to the Justice Department, four of the six individuals were random people pulled into a police photo lineup and had no known ties to Epstein. Only two names were suggested to have real connections: Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Leslie Wexner, with the others appearing to have little or no incriminating link. The Guardian and others criticized the situation, noting the unmasking might have harmed innocent people and was driven by political optics rather than clear evidence. The article portrays Khanna and Massie as having pressured the DOJ to release the documents by an unrealistic deadline, then reacting defensively when the public consequences became apparent, arguing that their actions exposed unrelated individuals to threats and misinformation.

When Democratic Rep. Whoops.

And, according to Khanna, that’s the DOJ’s fault; the California Democrat is offering up the political version of the “why did your face get in the way of my fist?” excuse to explain why he made an unforced error.

Massie is looking even more sloppy, implying but not explicitly stating that he doesn’t seem to have checked the date of birth of one of the innocent men against the date of birth of a member of the European Parliament from Italy, which seems to negate his claim that one of the individuals was “pretty high up” in a foreign government.

As the U.K. Guardian noted, only two of the six names had any real incriminating ties with Epstein, and only one was an especially new name: Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, an Emirati billionaire, who resigned as CEO of UAE-based logistics company DP World after he was named in connection with Epstein.

The other, retail billionaire Leslie Wexner, has long faced questions about his ties with Epstein, given that he seems to be how Epstein made most of his money and got his entrée into elite society. He was never charged with a crime, although one would assume his name appeared, redacted, somewhere in the documents, and likely in more than one somewhere.

The other names were Salvatore Nuara, Zurab Mikeladze, Leonic Leonov, and Nicola Caputo.

And they have nothing to do with the Epstein affair.

As the Guardian reported: “A spokesperson from the office of Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, told the Guardian the file was a photo lineup used for investigative purposes by the [Southern District of New York].”

“Rep Ro Khanna and Rep Thomas Massie forced the unmasking of completely random people selected years ago for an FBI lineup – men and women. Ro Khanna of California and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said they had seen unredacted Jeffrey Epstein documents that, in their view, clearly showed certain individuals were involved in improper activity. Massie claimed they found six names that had been redacted but appeared to be implicated in how the files were presented. Khanna read those names aloud on the House floor after seeing the materials at the Justice Department and used that to question why it took a trip to the DOJ for those identities to become public, arguing that if six names surfaced in two hours, there could be many more in the three million files.

Subsequently, the Justice Department said that four of the six individuals had simply been random people pulled into a photo lineup with Epstein, not people connected to Epstein’s crimes. Khanna, meanwhile, faulted the redactions and the pace of unmasking, and Massie suggested there may have been a mix-up about at least one person’s birth year when comparing him to a European Parliament member from Italy, which weakened the claim that one individual was “high up” in a foreign government. The Guardian noted that only two of the six names had meaningful ties to Epstein; among the others was Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, an Emirati billionaire who resigned as CEO of DP World after being named in Epstein-related matters, and Leslie Wexner, the billionaire whose ties to Epstein have long attracted scrutiny, though Wexner himself was never charged. The remaining names—Salvatore Nuara, Zurab Mikeladze, Leonic Leonov, and Nicola Caputo—had no evident connection to Epstein.

A spokesperson for Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general’s office, told the Guardian that the document in question was a photo lineup used for investigative purposes by the Southern District of New York and that Khanna and Massie had pushed to unmask people who were unrelated to Epstein. Khanna later acknowledged, in a social-media post, that Nuara, Mikeladze, Leonid Leonov, and Caputo were not connected to Epstein, and he criticized the DOJ for redacting and releasing the information in a way that led to confusion. Massie also appeared to backtrack somewhat, indicating he may have mistaken Nicola Caputo’s birth year and thus his supposed link to a former Italian MEP.

One of the men named, Nuara, told the Guardian he had contacted Khanna’s office after his name was mentioned, asking how he could clear his name. He suggested that once a name is publicly linked to a case, clearing it becomes nearly impossible. The piece argues that in politics, people will try to connect unrelated names to Epstein, and that Khanna and Massie leveraged the situation to demand transparency even as several innocent people were ensnared in the discussion.
