More than a decade later, the Trump governance’s EPA is moving to undo much of that framework, including removing the 2009 Endangerment Finding, a move presented as reducing regulatory burden and costs. A key example discussed is the removal of the start-stop engine feature, with officials arguing it’s costly and offers little climate benefit, while critics warn it could have negative environmental and legal consequences. the piece notes mixed reactions: White House officials tout broad deregulation and potential savings, while climate activists and some experts anticipate increased environmental harms and possible litigation. It cites sources including The Associated Press, Fox News, and UCLA scholars to present differing perspectives on the regulatory shift.

In 2009, then-President Barack Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency conducted a number of studies that fundamentally changed how the country views climate change.

In fact, those 2009 environmental findings are “the legal underpinning of nearly all climate regulations under the Clean Air Act for motor vehicles,” according to The Associated Press.

More than 16 years later, President Donald Trump’s EPA is undoing much of it — and apparently, it’s at the behest of the American people.

The EPA sent shockwaves through the climate change community on Thursday when it announced that it is eliminating the “2009 Obama EPA Endangerment Finding,” according to Fox News.

The outlet reported that “The 2009 development was an EPA finding that carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and three other greenhouse gases ‘endanger the public health and welfare of current and future generations’ under the Clean Air Act — leading to a slew of new restrictions and regulations.”

One of those restrictions? The Associated Press described those findings as the legal foundation for nearly all motor-vehicle climate regulations under the Clean Air Act. Now, more than 16 years later, the EPA under President Trump is undoing much of that, apparently at the urging of the American people. The agency signaled a dramatic shift by announcing it would eliminate the 2009 Endangerment Finding, which had said that carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and a few other greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare and thus trigger various restrictions. The piece then shifts to discuss a separate regulatory topic: start-stop engine systems that shut off the engine at stops and quickly restart it. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin claimed he heard from many Americans across all 50 states who dislike start-stop technology and believe it harms their car’s battery without meaningful environmental benefits, arguing the Trump administration is moving to remove this feature quickly. He also criticized putting a “climate participation trophy” on manufacturers and suggested they should not be rewarded or penalized for it. DOT Secretary Sean Duffy said scrapping the feature would lower manufacturing costs and support the auto industry’s revival. The White House framed the move as a major deregulation effort that could save Americans from heavy regulation. Climate activists were less than impressed: UCLA law professor Ann Carlson warned the change could cause more problems than any prior climate policy move, and legal observers anticipated litigation over the changes.
