Trump had to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3831692\/white-house-withdraws-trump-nominee-oversee-labor-statistics\/\">yank&nbsp;his nomination<\/a> of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3496912\/trump-nominates-ej-antoni-bls-chief\/\">Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni<\/a> to become the new BLS commissioner partly because of such distrust.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;US job growth surges in January, but labor market far from turning around,&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/us-job-growth-accelerates-january-unemployment-rate-falls-43-2026-02-11\/\">read<\/a> a <em>Reuters<\/em> headline on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Turns out the U.S. economy didn&rsquo;t create half a million jobs last year,&rdquo; the <em>New York Times <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/10\/us\/politics\/white-house-jobs.html\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, that report showed the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/economy\/\">economy<\/a> added 130,000 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jobs\/\">jobs<\/a> in January, and the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/unemployment\/\">unemployment<\/a> rate dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 4.3%, causing the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\">White House<\/a> to shout it from the rooftops.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today&rsquo;s blockbuster, expectation-shattering jobs report proves that President Trump&rsquo;s economic agenda continues to pay off,&rdquo; said White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;GREAT JOBS NUMBERS, FAR GREATER THAN EXPECTED!&rdquo; Trump exclaimed on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>The job gains came following cuts to federal workers and a crackdown on illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and administration officials ranging from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to trade adviser Peter Navarro have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/3897881\/who-to-blame-inflation-trump-vs-democrats-affordability\/\">vowed<\/a> that the economic progress would become visible this year, even if some of them might have been caught off guard by the January numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has been hoping for something like the economic boom that started in then-President Ronald Reagan&rsquo;s first term after inflation was brought under control, which in turn spurred a political recovery that saw Republicans go from losing seats in Congress in 1982 to winning reelection to the presidency in a 49-state landslide in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>But Biden struggled to convince voters battered by rampant inflation to look at other, more positive economic metrics, even with less skeptical media coverage than has greeted Trump&rsquo;s economic claims. &ldquo;Voters don&rsquo;t like Biden&rsquo;s economy &mdash;
