Mejia had surged into frist place with 29.1% of the vote, overtaking malinowski, who had previously represented New Jersey\u2019s 7th District.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Malinowski conceded after the result,criticizing what he called a flood of dark money and dishonest ads funded by AIPAC,and explaining he would oppose candidates backed by the group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the race was heavily influenced by AIPAC&#8217;s involvement,with the group spending more than $2.3 million on attack ads against malinowski. OpenSecrets notes that in the 2024 cycle AIPAC spent a majority of its funds on Democrats, though the group says it is bipartisan and supports candidates who strengthen the U.S.\u2013Israel relationship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Mejia, a progressive activist who previously worked with Bernie Sanders, is perceived as more critical of israel than Malinowski. Malinowski, the former representative from New Jersey&rsquo;s 7th Congressional District, lost his bid after&nbsp;AIPAC spent over $2.3 million in attack ads against him. Are you for ICE?&#8217;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>AIPAC spent about 58.6% of its funds in support of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\">Democratic<\/a> candidates in the 2024 election cycle compared to the 38.5% it spent on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republicans\/\">Republican<\/a> candidates, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/american-israel-public-affairs-cmte\/recipients?candscycle=2024&amp;id=D000046963&amp;toprecipscycle=2024&amp;candscycle=2024\">Open Secrets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When reached for comment on Malinowski&rsquo;s statement by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, AIPAC spokeswoman Deryn Sousa said, &ldquo;AIPAC is a bipartisan grassroots organization.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our six million members will be very active this election cycle supporting Democrats and Republicans who strengthen the U.S.-Israel partnership and opposing those&mdash;of either party&mdash;who may seek to undermine it,&rdquo; Sousa said.<\/p>\n<p>AIPAC aired the negative ads against Malinowski following his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>&lsquo;s handling of the war in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\/\">Gaza<\/a> and Malinowski&rsquo;s refusal to rule out conditioning aid to Israel. But Malinowski, whom AIPAC formerly endorsed in his prior congressional races, has maintained a pro-Israel stance and support for funding Israel&rsquo;s defense, according to the <em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/25\/nyregion\/new-jersey-malinowski-israel-aipac.html\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If AIPAC backs a candidate &ndash; openly or surreptitiously &ndash; in the June NJ-11 congressional primary, I will oppose that candidate and urge my supporters to do so as well,&rdquo; Malinowski said. &ldquo;The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >threat unlimited dark money poses<\/a> to our democracy is far more significant than the views of a single member of Congress on Middle East policy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>AIPAC had endorsed former New Jersey Lt. Gov. Taesha Way in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4447217\/candidates-democratic-primary-mikie-sherrill-house-seat\/\">11-person Democratic primary<\/a>. But after Way only took 17.4% of the vote last week, while Malinowski received 27.7% of the vote, Mejia pulled ahead <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/election-night.decisiondeskhq.com\/date\/2026-02-05\">into first place <\/a>with 29.1% of the vote. Mejia has been much more critical of Israel than Malinowski.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My convictions &ndash; including my support for Israel as a democratic and Jewish state &ndash; don&rsquo;t change because of who supports or opposes me,&rdquo; Malinowski said in his concession statement. &ldquo;But our Democratic Party should have nothing to do with a pro-Trump-billionaire-funded organization that demands absolute fealty to positions that are outside the mainstream of the American pro-Israel community, and then smears those who don&rsquo;t fall into line.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4452537\/tom-malinowski-cedes-new-jersey-special-primary-election-analilia-mejia\/\">TOM MALINOWSKI CONCEDES NEW JERSEY PRIMARY ELECTION TO ANALILIA MEJIA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mejia, former national political director for Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&lsquo;s (I-VT) 2020 presidential campaign, is now set to take on Republican candidate Joe Hathaway, the mayor of Randolph Township, in the April general special election.
