Rebranding his efforts as the “Arsenal of Freedom,” hegseth has been traveling the country—skipping high-profile defense summits in Brussels and Munich—to publicly urge contractors to remove bureaucratic obstacles, reduce executive bonuses and stock buybacks, and deliver better weapons on time and budget. He delivered a fiery speech to shipyard workers at Bath Iron Works as part of this effort, portraying the mission as a national accountability drive rather than a political stunt.

The report also describes a Pentagon crackdown that aligns with this agenda. The U.S.Army has moved to collect about $1.1 million in penalties from Northrop Grumman and Global Military Products for delayed ammunition shipments, and major reviews of contractor performance are underway, with officials signaling that noncompliance will lead to remediation plans or enforcement actions. Hegseth acknowledges internal Pentagon challenges—urging the department to “fix its own house” by simplifying requirements and improving communication with industry—while highlighting recent defense deals with major makers like Raytheon, Boeing, and Lockheed as examples of reform.

Hegseth plays ‘good cop, bad cop’ in effort to pressure defense contractors to reform

HEGSETH’S ‘ARSENAL OF FREEDOM’ CRUSADE: Secretary Pete Hegseth, befitting his rebranded title, is on the warpath.
