It notes existing headwinds for Republicans, such as the midterm penalty and concerns tied to economic issues and controversial topics like Epstein, but suggests that Trump’s hardline immigration stance could work in the GOP’s favor if leveraged strategically. It also highlights intense scrutiny of ICE following high-profile incidents.

Key poll takeaways:

– Cygnal poll among likely midterm voters: 61% favor deporting people illegally in the U.S. back to their countries; swing voters 64%; Democrats opposed at 67%.

– On ICE enforcement, 54% of midterm voters support it; swing voters 59%; Democrats 81% opposed.

– 73% of voters think people entering illegally are breaking the law; 64% see illegal immigration as a problem.

– Harvard/Harris poll: immigration policy enjoys strong approval (around 73%), even as overall approval of Trump’s handling on other issues remains below 50%.

– In this Harvard poll, inflation and immigration were among the top concerns (inflation at 33%, immigration at 29%). A notable share view Trump’s immigration policies favorably, and a majority support cooperation with ICE to remove criminals (67%), with 82% backing deporting those who have committed serious crimes.

– The polls show Democrats holding a slight lead in the generic midterm ballot (about 4 points),but the article argues that immigration could be a powerful campaign issue for Republicans if used effectively.

Overall takeaway:

– Immigration remains a deeply influential and polarizing issue. The poll, conducted among likely midterm voters with a 3.09 percent margin of error, found that despite the mass hysteria over ICE, those voters generally seem in favor of Trump’s immigration policies.

When it came to the question of “Do you support or oppose deporting those illegally in the United States back to their country of origin?” the majority of polled midterm voters were in favor at 61 percent.

(Swing voters were even more supportive, at 64 percent, while Democrats opposed at a 67 percent rate.)

“Do you support or oppose Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcing federal immigration laws to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S.?” yielded slightly more polarized findings. Among midterm voters, 54 percent supported ICE enforcing federal immigration laws, with swing voters at 59 percent support, and Democrat voters at 81 percent opposition.

Other key findings: 73 percent of voters think those that illegal aliens entering the U.S. are breaking the law, and 64 percent of voters think illegal immigration is a problem for the country.

In a Harvard/Harris poll, conducted among 2,000 registered voters and with a margin of error of 1.99 percent, the Trump administration again found some good news — amid a sea of middling news, for what it’s worth — when it comes to immigration.

In this poll, Trump wasn’t above 50 percent approval on any major metric — such as the economy or handling inflation — except for the way he’s handled anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis.

When it comes to the most pressing matters for these registered voters, the top concern was inflation, which garnered 33 percent of the votes. Right behind it at 29 percent? Immigration.

In more good news for Trump, the president’s policies are roundly popular. His immigration policies garnered 73 percent approval, eclipsed only by Trump’s policies lowering the cost of prescription drugs.

And contrary to popular belief (and most Democrat messaging) the majority of those polled by Harvard/Harris believe that both local officials and state authorities should work with ICE to remove criminals: 67 percent agreed with both the handing over of criminals and cooperation with ICE.

Oh, and speaking of Democrat messaging, 60 percent of voters agree that Democrats are encouraging ICE resistance, and 57 percent oppose that messaging.

In perhaps the biggest revelation, the overwhelming majority support deporting those who have committed serious crimes. A whopping 82 percent of those polled agree with this assessment.

Look, this is all to say: Trump and the GOP still have quite a bit of work cut out of them. The Harvard/Harris poll found that Democrats hold a 4-point lead in the midterm generic ballot.

That’s not insignificant — but neither is it insurmountable.

Americans clearly care (and approve) of Trump’s approach to illegal immigration, regardless of what leftists are screeching into their ears. This matters, and anyone who knows anything about political warfare knows the risks and advantages of making the midterms a single-issue matter.

But for a party and president that’s suffering through some extreme PR issues on matters like the economy, that risk may very well be worth it.

And if Trump and the GOP can play off this issue smartly and attack the opposition’s laissez-faire attitude on illegal immigration, maybe, just maybe, Republicans can avoid that dreaded “midterm penalty.”

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! Even before counting the usual midterm penalties that tend to hurt the party that holds the presidency, the GOP is grappling with divisive issues like the Epstein files, signs that some Americans haven’t felt the promised economic relief, and the ongoing debate over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE has drawn sharp scrutiny after tragic incidents such as the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and many worry that Trump’s hard-line immigration stance could backfire politically in the midterms.

Polls suggest that, despite the controversy, Trump’s immigration policy could be a political asset for him. A Cygnal poll of likely midterm voters found broad support for Trump’s immigration approach, even amid widespread concern about ICE. For example, 61% favored deporting those illegally in the United States, with swing voters at 64% and Democrats opposed at 67%. When asked about ICE enforcing federal immigration laws to remove illegal entrants, 54% of midterm voters supported it, swing voters 59%, and Democrats 81% opposed. Other findings included that 73% view illegal entry as illegal activity and 64% see illegal immigration as a national problem. In a Harvard/Harris poll of 2,000 registered voters (±1.99%), Trump’s immigration policy received strong backing, even as other issues showed more mixed sentiment. Inflation remained the top concern for many (33%), but immigration was also prominent (29%). The poll reported 73% approval for Trump’s immigration policies and 82% agreement that criminals should be deported. It also found substantial support for cooperation with ICE from local and state authorities (67%), and that a majority of voters thought Democrats were encouraging ICE resistance (60%)—with 57% opposing that messaging. Notably, the poll indicated Democrats held a small 4-point lead in the generic midterm ballot, but immigration policy resonated with voters, suggesting the issue could be leveraged politically.

Overall, the takeaway is that Trump and the GOP still have a significant amount of work to do, especially given economic concerns and PR challenges. However, if they smartly emphasize immigration and frame the opposition’s stance as lax on borders, they might use the issue to mitigate the traditional midterm penalty

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-02-05T214507.007.jpg
[33651
3813,15638,3634
post-2567528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-immigration","tag-polls","tag-trump
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-02-05T214507.007.jpg
["GET
