Some noted a large teleprompter with a phonetic breakdown of the song&rsquo;s Italian lyrics, while others wondered if she was lip-syncing.<a><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three reporters &mdash; including The Associated Press &mdash; asked the International Olympic Committee and local organizers about her during their daily news conference Saturday to address the teleprompter and doubts about lip-syncing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-italian-background\">Non-Italian background<\/h2>\n<p>Carey was born in New York to an Irish American mother, who was an opera singer, and a Black father with Venezuelan roots.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her non-Italian background, the local organizing committee asked her to perform at Friday&rsquo;s opening ceremony and touted her for months as&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mariah-carey-musicares-grammys-recording-academy-fc215d9488caeee5d4a37a8c87a511cb\">a big get to open<\/a>&nbsp;the Winter Games.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We believe that Mariah Carey&rsquo;s performance was exceptional,&rdquo; Milan Cortina&rsquo;s director of ceremonies Maria Laura Iascone said Saturday. &ldquo;She was capable of creating a magic moment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s unclear whether Carey chose to sing &ldquo;Volare,&rdquo; but&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/mariah-carey-2026-olympics-opening-ceremony-performance\">she told Vogue<\/a>&nbsp;after the ceremony that the song has long been a favorite of hers.<\/p>\n<p>The show did feature the Italian voices of tenor&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/milan-cortina-opening-ceremony-rehearsals-olympics-1acc32327bc435e01c5b6f178db3f260\">Andrea Bocelli<\/a>, singer-songwriter Laura Pausini and mezzosoprano Cecilia Bartoli.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/entertainment\/4433645\/trump-skipping-super-bowl-bad-bunny-green-day-performance-im-anti-them\/\">TRUMP SKIPPING SUPER BOWL OVER BAD BUNNY AND GREEN DAY PERFORMANCES: &lsquo;I&rsquo;M ANTI-THEM&rsquo;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lip-syncing-questions\">Lip-syncing questions<\/h2>\n<p>While armchair analysts mused online that the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/christmas-mariah-carey-queen-song-346d94b58c268edb5a7fcb3c912e982c\">&ldquo;All I Want for Christmas is You&rdquo;<\/a>&nbsp;singer appeared stiff, especially while singing in Italian, the crowd inside the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/san-siro-opening-ceremony-winter-olympics-68f7447ed09409fc9dcb1146c46c7d79\">San Siro stadium<\/a>&nbsp;cheered and applauded when they realized she was performing in the local language.<\/p>\n<p>She later stunned the audience with her own &ldquo;Nothing is Impossible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Asked Saturday if Carey was lip-syncing, Iascone dodged the question and instead praised her as &ldquo;really extraordinary.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She said that &ldquo;in order to be on the safe side,&rdquo; they always record performances ahead of time for internationally broadcast events.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&rsquo;t directly address if Carey was lip-syncing and said the singer wasn&rsquo;t paid for her performance.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were all satisfied with the result we had,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phonetic-teleprompter\">Phonetic teleprompter<\/h2>\n<p>A large teleprompter was visible inside the stadium, spelling out phonetically how Carey should sing the Italian words.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Voh-lah-reh,&rdquo; it read for &ldquo;Volare.&rdquo; And &ldquo;Nell blue Dee-peen-toe D blue&rdquo; for &ldquo;Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Posts of the scrolling lyrics on social media, including from Italian high jumper&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2024-olympics-gianmarco-tamberi-wedding-ring-f46ec42b3e23db98e2b3086ea44333c3\">Gianmarco Tamberi<\/a>, racked up hundreds of thousands of views online.<\/p>\n<p>When the AP asked Iascone about it, she said &ldquo;of course&rdquo; there was a teleprompter.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4448073\/american-cultural-rebound\/\"><strong>HUGO GURDON: AMERICAN DECLINE, OR A REBOUND?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Especially for those artists who sang in a different language than their own native language,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;And they needed some support, especially regarding the pronunciation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Iascone added: &ldquo;This is part of the show.
