It originated from hacked emails associated with John Podesta and Hillary Clinton and spread across forums and social media despite repeated denials, spreading into the real world when a man fired shots at Comet Ping Pong in December 2016 but caused no injuries. The article uses this to illustrate how online rumors can be amplified by polarization and platforms, turning online chatter into tangible danger.

It then connects Pizzagate to the Epstein case, noting that the Department of Justice’s unsealed documents revived interest in related lines of inquiry, including numerous references to “pizza” in Epstein-related materials. Investigative reporter Tom Elliott and Vanity Fair are cited for highlighting Epstein and his associates’ unusual fixation on pizza and grape soda, with some exchanges using coded language. The piece emphasizes that, even as many dismiss the conspiracy, thes threads demonstrate how Pizzagate and Epstein-era material continue to captivate and provoke discussion, underscoring the broader warning about how conspiracies can grow and persist online.

Outside of perhaps Watergate, no “-gate” scandal has quite captured national attention quite like Pizzagate.

Pizzagate was a conspiracy theory that exploded online during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, alleging that a child sex-trafficking ring involving prominent Democratic officials was being run out of a Washington, D.C., pizzeria called Comet Ping Pong.

The theory grew out of hacked and leaked s from John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, which conspiracy-minded users on forums and social media interpreted as containing coded references to abuse.

Despite repeated denials, the story spread rapidly across platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube.

The consequences turned from online rumor to real-world danger in December 2016, when a man armed with a rifle went to the restaurant to “investigate” the claims and fired shots inside. This conspiracy theory circulated online during the 2016 U.S. presidential race, alleging that a child sex-trafficking ring run by prominent Democratic officials operated out of a Washington, D.C., pizzeria called Comet Ping Pong. The idea stemmed from hacked and leaked emails from John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair, which some online communities claimed contained coded references to abuse.

Despite repeated denials, the claim spread rapidly across platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube. The rumor moved from online chatter to real-world danger in December 2016 when a man with a rifle went to the restaurant to “investigate” the allegations and fired shots inside the building. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Authorities stated that there was no truth to the allegations and that the pizzeria had no ties to any trafficking operation. Pizzagate has since become a classic example of how conspiracy theories can grow and persist through social media and political polarization. Even years later, the story lingers, mocked by skeptics while true believers maintain that something sinister is amiss.

The Epstein documents seem poised to reopen this controversy. As the Department of Justice released large volumes of material related to the convicted sex offender, many researchers gained access to the files to examine them themselves. For those inclined toward conspiracy thinking, a simple search for “pizza” within the Epstein files yielded numerous results—849 occurrences—with more details emerging upon deeper digging. Investigative journalist Tom Elliott highlighted an unusual preoccupation with pizza among Epstein and his associates, posting about his findings as he delved further into the documents.

“I’m not making any claims,” Elliott cautioned in one post, “just reporting what I find as I dig through these files.” Even those who doubt Pizzagate would have to admit that Epstein and his associates display an odd fondness for “pizza.” Vanity Fair also covered this strange pizza fixation, uncovering quotes such as a 2018 message asking, “What time do you want to get pizza and grape soda tomorrow?” and a 2015 email with the subject line: “Your Pizza Is YUMMY YUMMY!!” Another 2018 message read, “This is better than a Chinese cookie! … let’s go for pizza and grape soda again.
