Natan Obed, head of Canada’s inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, said the consulate’s symbolism is unlikely to sway Trump, but Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand emphasized ongoing collaboration on environmental, security, and economic fronts and noted plans to open a consulate in anchorage, Alaska.

France opened its consulate the same day, highlighting a European-Canadian effort to reassure Greenlanders amid concerns about possible annexation and to reinforce Arctic alliance against unilateral pressure. Obed stressed the importance of Inuit cultural connections and the need for respectful representation of Greenland’s self-determination and territorial autonomy.

The moves come after a year of tensions sparked by Trump’s vocal interest in Greenland, which officials described as a strategic priority for the United States. The broader context includes discussions of expanding U.S. presence and infrastructure in Greenland and the region, as part of a dynamic of great-power competition in the Arctic.

Canada swipes at Trump’s Greenland ambitions as Maple Leaf raised on island

Canada opened a new consulate in Greenland on Friday and showed support for the Arctic island’s sovereignty and ties to Denmark, marking diplomatic pushback to President Donald Trump’s ambitions to acquire the island.

Natan Obed, president of Canada’s Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, used the grand opening to take a swipe at Trump and said the symbolism of the consulate wouldn’t resonate with the president.

Recommended Stories

India invests $500 billion as part of US trade agreement lowering tariffs

DOJ allowing Congress to view unredacted Epstein files

Trump signs executive order quadrupling beef imports from Argentina

“I’m not quite sure that Donald Trump is going to be at all moved by Canada opening a consulate here,”
