Committee chair James Comer said the Clintons would participate in transcribed depositions without time limits, and that the House would pursue contempt if they refused to comply. This marks a shift from the Clintons\u2019 earlier stance that the inquiry was invalid and politically motivated. In a jan. 13 joint letter to Comer, they argued that the investigation targeted them for partisan reasons and invoked concerns about government actions under then-President Trump and events surrounding January 6. Subpoenas were issued in August, with delays continuing into January; the case references prior contempt sentences for Peter Navarro and steve Bannon and notes that Democrats could vote to hold the Clintons in contempt, according to Politico. House Republicans gave the couple a noon deadline to agree to transcribed and taped depositions with no time limits. The House would have moved forward with contempt proceedings had the couple refused to comply.        <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once it became clear that the House of Representatives would hold them in contempt, the Clintons completely CAVED and will appear for transcribed depositions this month,&#8221; Comer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJamesComer\/status\/2018740003501678769?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on Tuesday. &#8220;After delaying and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >defying duly issued subpoenas<\/a> for six months, the House Oversight Committee moved swiftly to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings in response to their non-compliance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Clintons&rsquo; decision to participate in the probe is a dramatic shift from last month, when they <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/bill-and-hillary-clinton-refuse-to-testify-in-epstein-probe-as-house-gop-moves-toward-contempt-for-the-former-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that the investigation was invalid and politically motivated. In a Jan. 13 joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/13\/us\/politics\/bill-hillary-clinton-testimony-epstein-inquiry-contempt.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Comer provided to the <em>New York Times<\/em>, the Clintons said, &#8220;There is no plausible explanation for what you are doing other than partisan politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The letter invoked President Donald Trump&rsquo;s crackdown on illegal immigration and the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. &#8220;This past year has seen our Government engage in unprecedented acts, including against our own citizens. People have been seized from their homes, their workplaces, and the streets of their communities. &hellip; The people who laid siege to the U.S. Capitol have been pardoned and called heroes,&#8221; the Clintons wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The House subpoenaed the Clintons in August, and the couple repeatedly delayed the investigation until January, when they said they would not participate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/clintons-cave-to-house-epstein-probe-after-facing-contempt-vote\/\" title=\"... Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon were each sentenced to four months in prison under the Biden administration when the House voted to hold them in contempt after they refused to testify.
