The arrangement, negotiated by President Trump and Senate Democratic leaders, has exposed divisions within the Democratic camps, with some House members pressing for tougher action on DHS and ICE and others cautious about undermining related agencies like FEMA and TSA. Representative Pramila Jayapal and Representative Veronica Escobar argue that House members should have a stronger say in reining in immigration enforcement, while others stress the need for unity around the broader objective of reforming ICE. The dispute intensified after the January 24 killing of Alex Pretti, which galvanized opposition to a full-year DHS funding and prompted a two-week window for further negotiations to avoid a potential shutdown. Despite claims of unity from leaders like Pete Aguilar and Hakeem Jeffries, some lawmakers—such as Rosa DeLauro and Jim McGovern—remain split on backing the bill, highlighting ongoing intra-party tensions as Speaker mike Johnson navigates competing demands within his ranks.

House Democrats are unhappy with their Senate colleagues over the latest budget deal.

The deal on the table, crafted by President Donald Trump and Senate Democratic leaders, funds most federal agencies through the rest of the fiscal year but pauses Homeland Security funding after Feb. 13.

Many House Democrats want to vent their anger with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and want DHS to be treated even more harshly, according to Politico.

“There are some Senate Democrats who always signal nervousness and are so reluctant to be strong,” Democratic Rep.
