And that&rsquo;s not going to be good,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From a public safety standpoint for anybody in that environment. Potentially you have a crowd that could be agitated and trying to get their point across,&rdquo; McDonnell said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And then you have the ICE agents who are doing their job. And for us to come in then and try and create an enforcement action for wearing a mask, it&rsquo;s not a safe way to do business.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/los-angeles-police-will-not-enforce-california-federal-agent-mask-ban\/18512599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KABC-TV<\/a>, Newsom signed the &ldquo;No Secret Police Act&rdquo; this past September in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The editorial board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/01\/opinion\/mask-comes-off-useless-anti-ice-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> wrote that the California law comes at a time when &ldquo;radical activists have been stalking and targeting ICE agents &mdash; and people they wrongly believe to be ICE agents, like the air marshals that a mob trapped in a restaurant in Lynwood this week.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post wrote that the law &ldquo;was always terrible policy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >put law enforcement officers &#038;mdash<\/a>; local and federal &mdash; in danger.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is just the latest example of bad law, passed for symbolic or ideological reasons, or for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-fed-nominee-lisa-cook-criticized-for-being-unqualified-embellishing-resume\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Fed Nominee Lisa Cook Criticized For Being Unqualified, Embellishing Resume\">short-term political expediency<\/a>,&rdquo; the article added.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;California has enough real problems for legislators to deal with, rather than passing pointless and even dangerous laws.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles County Sheriff&rsquo;s Department likewise said it will not enforce the ban, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2026\/01\/29\/lapd-wont-enforce-ban-on-federal-law-enforcement-officers-wearing-masks-chief-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Federal law governs civil immigration matters, and under the U.S. Constitution, federal authority supersedes state and local laws.
