It leans on Politico editor Melanie Mason’s review of Newsom’s forthcoming memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, to illustrate his reaction to his mother’s remark that “It’s okay to be average,” describing his response as a crushing blow that reveals an obsession with elite status over genuine achievement. The piece argues that Newsom’s public comportment—such as his Davos appearance and his critique of Trump—serves a calculated performance designed for a national audience and perhaps a 2028 presidential bid, reflecting a shift in the Democratic Party toward identity-based politics and away from merit. It cites alleged on-camera dishonesty, like the claim of having Biden on the line during wildfires, to suggest a pattern of deception. The article also invokes C.S. Lewis’s warning that not everything said by a fictional demonic figure should be trusted, using it to frame Newsom’s statements as potentially manipulative. it contends that Newsom’s words and actions are highly performative and frequently enough unreliable, raising questions about the sincerity and motives behind his public persona.

    Read more…

Democratic Gov. The reviewer provided no hint of any great achievements and no evidence that Newsom ever sought them. Instead, one senses that he just always wanted to be elite. Hence, his objection to the word “average.”

Status, power, and pleasure aside, Newsom comes across as a man who never really pursued anything. Indeed, he merely plays the role of a man driven to do great things.

And that brings us back to the performative nature of everything he says and does in public.

Recall, for instance, last month in Davos, where Newsom harangued Europeans over their diplomacy with President Donald Trump. Confused reporters pressed the governor for alternatives, but he had none. Like a Trump-hating automaton, he merely bashed the president before a puzzled foreign audience.

In other words, he delivered a performance for the people back home.

Newsom knows, of course, that his Trump Derangement Syndrome will make him a 2028 Democratic presidential front-runner. After all, the modern Democratic Party has abandoned merit in favor of identity-based quotas and truth in favor of lies. That makes Newsom their ideal standard-bearer.

Speaking of lies, the governor has shown — on camera — that he feels no shame while engaged in obvious dishonesty.

Who, for instance, can forget that moment in January 2025 when, during the California wildfires, Newsom, caught off guard by one of his constituents, lied about having then-President Joe Biden on the phone with him that very moment? If Newsom does secure the 2028 Democratic nomination, then the Republican nominee should run that video as a campaign ad.

And that brings us back to the problem of evaluating anything Newsom says or does.

“Readers are advised to remember that the devil is a liar,” legendary Christian author C.S. Lewis wrote in the preface to his satirical classic, “The Screwtape Letters,” which features an imaginary correspondence between Screwtape, a senior devil with an administrative position in hell, and his nephew Wormwood, a novice tempter.

“Not everything that Screwtape says should be assumed to be true even from his own angle,” Lewis added.

Therein lies the precise problem with Newsom.

Of course, we cannot and would not equate the California governor with a demon. But the demonic spirit lives inside everyone who lies with such skill and ease.

Did Newsom sincerely object to his mother calling him “average”? Or does he simply now believe that people with real ambitions and achievements outside of politics would react that way, and so he should, too?

Either way, much like the party he represents, everything about Newsom feels like a lie.

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! This makes the “real” Newsom hard to discern, since ordinary people don’t think or behave as he does. It cites a Politico excerpt from Newsom’s forthcoming memoir in which his mother tries to reassure him about his learning difficulties and poor grades, only for Newsom to recall how deeply hurt he was by that comment. The author uses this to suggest Newsom resents being labeled “average” and to claim that, beyond status and pleasure, he never genuinely pursued real achievements; he merely acts as if he aims to achieve great things.

The article argues Newsom’s public persona is performative, pointing to a Davos moment where he condemned Trump’s diplomacy without offering alternatives, performing for a foreign audience rather than presenting a real policy path. It posits that Newsom sees a 2028 Democratic nomination as likely, given the party’s shift toward identity-based criteria and rhetoric over merit. It references an on-camera lie during California wildfires in January 2025 about having Biden on the line, suggesting that if Newsom secures the nomination, that clip should be used in campaign ads. Citing a CS Lewis reference about the devil being a liar, it contends that Newsom’s dishonesty is part of a broader pattern, and whether his objection to being called “average” was sincere or simply a sign that he believes ambitious outsiders should react similarly remains unclear.
