It relies on Melanie Mason’s Politico review of Newsom’s forthcoming memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, to illustrate the idea that Newsom fixates on personal history and elite status rather than meaningful governance, including a childhood moment when his mother told him it’s okay to be average.The article argues that this fear of being average fuels his public persona and his disdain for ordinary achievement.

Specific examples cited include Newsom’s Davos remarks and what the author describes as public dishonesty, such as an alleged claim about having President Biden on the phone during wildfires. The piece suggests Newsom’s appeal to the Democratic base—especially against a Trump-centric opponent—stems from a broader cultural shift in the party toward identity politics and perceived ideological rigidity, rather than merit.

Analogies are used to underscore skepticism about Newsom’s sincerity: a reference to C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape letters warns that not everything a clever, persuasive figure says should be taken at face value. The overall argument is that Newsom’s public persona is a deliberate performance, and that evaluating his words and actions remains difficult as they function more as theater than as reliable policy or principle.

    Read more…

Democratic Gov. The reviewer provided no hint of any great achievements and no evidence that Newsom ever sought them. Instead, one senses that he just always wanted to be elite. Hence, his objection to the word “average.”

Status, power, and pleasure aside, Newsom comes across as a man who never really pursued anything. Indeed, he merely plays the role of a man driven to do great things.

And that brings us back to the performative nature of everything he says and does in public.

Recall, for instance, last month in Davos, where Newsom harangued Europeans over their diplomacy with President Donald Trump. Confused reporters pressed the governor for alternatives, but he had none. Like a Trump-hating automaton, he merely bashed the president before a puzzled foreign audience.

In other words, he delivered a performance for the people back home.

Newsom knows, of course, that his Trump Derangement Syndrome will make him a 2028 Democratic presidential front-runner. After all, the modern Democratic Party has abandoned merit in favor of identity-based quotas and truth in favor of lies. That makes Newsom their ideal standard-bearer.

Speaking of lies, the governor has shown — on camera — that he feels no shame while engaged in obvious dishonesty.

Who, for instance, can forget that moment in January 2025 when, during the California wildfires, Newsom, caught off guard by one of his constituents, lied about having then-President Joe Biden on the phone with him that very moment? If Newsom does secure the 2028 Democratic nomination, then the Republican nominee should run that video as a campaign ad.

And that brings us back to the problem of evaluating anything Newsom says or does.

“Readers are advised to remember that the devil is a liar,” legendary Christian author C.S. Lewis wrote in the preface to his satirical classic, “The Screwtape Letters,” which features an imaginary correspondence between Screwtape, a senior devil with an administrative position in hell, and his nephew Wormwood, a novice tempter.

“Not everything that Screwtape says should be assumed to be true even from his own angle,” Lewis added.

Therein lies the precise problem with Newsom.

Of course, we cannot and would not equate the California governor with a demon. But the demonic spirit lives inside everyone who lies with such skill and ease.

Did Newsom sincerely object to his mother calling him “average”? Or does he simply now believe that people with real ambitions and achievements outside of politics would react that way, and so he should, too?

Either way, much like the party he represents, everything about Newsom feels like a lie.

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! It suggests that discovering the real Newsom is nearly impossible because most people don’t think or act the way he does. As evidence, it cites a Politico review of Newsom’s forthcoming memoir, in which he reportedly broke down when his mother told him it’s okay to be average. He later wrote that he “doesn’t recall crueler words ever said about me,” a moment the author uses to illustrate Newsom’s sensitivity to status and his apparent compulsion to avoid mediocrity. The piece contends this reveals a man who has seemingly never pursued real achievements, only the appearance of greatness, and who therefore comes across as driven by performance rather than genuine ambition.

According to the article, Newsom’s public conduct mirrors this performative impulse. It mentions a Davos moment in which he criticized Europe’s diplomacy with President Trump but offered no workable alternatives, effectively delivering a partisan performance for a domestic audience. The author argues Newsom understands that his outspoken opposition to Trump could make him a leading candidate for the 2028 Democratic nomination, aligning with a view that the modern party prizes identity-based criteria and narrative over merit or truth. The piece also accuses Newsom of on-camera dishonesty, recalling an instance during the California wildfires in January 2025 when he allegedly claimed Biden was on the line with him at that moment—an instance the author suggests could be used as a campaign ad if he secures the nomination.

To frame Newsom’s alleged dishonesty, the author invokes C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters, noting that not everything a deceitful figure says should be believed, even from their own perspective. The comparison is not that Newsom is literally a demon, but that the “demonic” ease with which he lies may live in him. The piece questions whether Newsom objected to being called “average” or now believes others would react similarly, but whatever the case, it argues that Newsom’s public persona—like the party he represents—feels less like genuine leadership and more like a sustained lie

[548,33651
50410,3881,32742,5894,5244
post-2562494","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-conservative-news-daily","category-the-western-journal","tag-controversy-2","tag-family","tag-gavin-newsom","tag-politics","tag-quotes
["GET
