The city previously saw a similar period without a killing following the deployment of the National Guard in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p>During the National Guard deployment, D.C. saw a 12-day streak, but the start of 2026 marks the first time in nearly 30 years the city has surpassed 21 days without a killing.<\/p>\n<p>The three-week streak <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2026\/02\/01\/crime-dc-homicides-january\/\">ended<\/a> Jan. 21 after a fatal shooting in Northeast Washington. During the same time period in 2025, there had been nine homicides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other violent crimes and property crimes also saw a significant drop at the start of 2026, marking an overall 600-point drop in crime in the last year. Assault with a deadly weapon is the only crime on the rise this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The crime drop has unfolded amid federal intervention at the hands of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2025, Trump issued an executive order declaring a crime emergency in the District and placed the MPD under federal control under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act for the first time in history.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law enforcement agencies and National Guard troops were deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-gets-asked-about-his-9-11-memorial-interaction-with-kamala-harris-what-did-you-say\/\" title=\"Trump Gets Asked About His 9\/11 Memorial Interaction with Kamala Harris: &#039;What Did You Say?&#039;\">assist local police<\/a>, a move the administration credited with helping reduce crime.<\/p>\n<p>The White House and U.S. Attorney&rsquo;s Office highlighted arrest numbers, prosecutions, and firearm seizures as evidence of progress earlier this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to a White House <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2026\/01\/365-wins-in-365-days-president-trumps-return-marks-new-era-of-success-prosperity\/\">fact sheet<\/a> celebrating Trump&rsquo;s first year in office, the D.C.
