Trevor lee (R) has introduced House Bill 96 to allow pharmacists to dispense ivermectin over the counter without an individual prescription if a doctor preauthorizes distribution and the pharmacist completes a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >state-approved risk assessment<\/a>; pharmacists could refuse if they deem it unsafe. Lee framed the bill as part of broader medical-freedom goals and said it aligns with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s &#8220;Make America Healthy Again&#8221; initiative. Ivermectin is approved by the FDA for certain parasite infections and some topical uses, but major health agencies, including the FDA and WHO, do not recommend it for COVID-19 outside clinical trials. Lee said the measure responds to people seeking veterinary ivermectin from livestock suppliers\u2014a practise the FDA warns can be perilous because animal formulations and doses differ from those for humans. Kennedy Jr.&rsquo;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/maha\/index.html\">&ldquo;Make America Healthy Again&rdquo;<\/a> initiative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was launched under President Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration and aims to address chronic disease and reshape public health priorities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lee has also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/utahpolitics.news\/utah-bill-easing-school-vaccine-exemptions-stalls-on-tie-vote\/\">pushed<\/a> legislation to reduce the number of required vaccines for school-aged children, following suit with HHS&rsquo;s reevaluation of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4406894\/hhs-curtails-childhood-vaccination-schedule\/\">childhood vaccine schedule<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the drug is known for use in livestock treatment, ivermectin is approved by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/ivermectin-and-covid-19\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/a> to combat parasites and, in some cases, used as a topical treatment for skin conditions related to parasites or rosacea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ivermectin gained high-profile attention early in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/COVID-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic after online creators, such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/10\/joe-rogan-cnn-horse-dewormer-covid?srsltid=AfmBOoowRtJlFDP8eqQ3QJYONapULjlRfEDLR82bF40X7apUjXuhJDun\">podcaster Joe Rogan<\/a>, promoted it as a treatment or preventive for the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Major public health organizations, including the FDA and the World Health Organization, do not recommend ivermectin as treatment for COVID outside of clinical trials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lee said he decided to sponsor the bill after people started turning to veterinarians or livestock stores to acquire the medication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/FDA\/\">FDA<\/a>, ivermectin products made for animals are distinctly different from those safe for human consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A dose of ivermectin purchased at a livestock supply store is typically meant to supplement a 12,000-pound horse or other large livestock. The FDA warns that large doses of ivermectin without a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/propublica-blames-pro-lifers-for-abortion-pill-linked-death\/\" title=\"ProPublica Blames Pro-Lifers For Abortion Pill-Linked Death\">healthcare provider&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s prescription can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/4442763\/ice-facility-texas-struggles-measles-outbreak\/\"><strong>ICE FACILITY IN TEXAS STRUGGLES WITH MEASLES OUTBREAK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several other states have passed legislation expanding ivermectin access, such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/ivermectin-now-available-without-prescription-texas\">Texas<\/a>, which passed a bill in December making it available over the counter without a prescription. RFK Jr. praised the move in Texas during a MAHA bill signing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arizona state <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/12\/03\/arizona-lawmaker-proposes-making-ivermectin-available-over-the-counter\/\">Rep.
