All those experts said that it was a bad idea. I think it\u2019s a bad idea and so that will not happen. And so folks should get vaccinated, if they want to, we\u2019ll obviously provide that, but under no circumstances will the state be asking you to show proof of vaccination, and I don\u2019t think private companies should be doing that either,\u201d the governor said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis made the point that each resident of Florida should be able to determine on their own if they want to get vaccinated, as well as what events in which they feel safe participating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo start going down the road of vaccine passports, I mean, you have some of these states saying to go to a sporting event, you have to show either a negative test or a vaccine proof. I think you just got to make decisions. If you want to go to an event, go to an event. If you don\u2019t, don\u2019t. But to be requiring people to provide all this proof, that\u2019s not how you get society back to normal so we\u2019re rejecting any vaccine passports here in the state of Florida,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Orlando local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2021\/03\/18\/florida-wont-require-covid-19-vaccine-passports-governor-says\/#\/\/\">media<\/a>, the governor also spoke about the topic on Thursday in a meeting with medical personnel. Attendees included Dr. Scott Atlas, professor Sunetra Gupta, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Dr. Martin Kulldorff. All of them reportedly agreed with the governor and were against the idea of vaccine identification, saying that it could end up harming more than helping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vaccine hesitancy data show that the people who are hesitant to take vaccines actually tend to be the working class people, poor, poor people, minority populations. We\u2019re going to then turn around and say, \u2018You have to have a vaccine passport to participate in American life,\u2019 it\u2019s going to be a new vaccine Jim Crow. It\u2019s a huge, huge mistake that will undermine trust in public health, and I think it\u2019s just morally, it\u2019s just morally wrong,\u201d Dr. Bhattacharya said.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s announcement comes as many countries and areas are rolling out their own \u201cvaccine passport\u201d programs and ramping up for summer travel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/feb\/28\/green-pass-how-are-vaccine-passports-working-in-israel\">Israel<\/a> already has its \u201cGreen Pass\u201d for citizens to prove vaccination, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-56427830\">European Union<\/a> announced that it plans to require some type of \u201cdigital certificate\u201d to prove vaccination, as well. The state of New York has also said that it plans to require an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-cuomo-announces-pilot-program-testing-excelsior-pass-madison-square-garden-and\">Excelsior Pass<\/a>\u201d for people to prove a recent negative COVID-19 test or vaccination.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-travel-pandemics-europe-airlines-9c410bacd04c443f4ed562d1b2c3d37e\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported on Thursday that business groups and airlines are \u201clobbying the White House to take the lead in setting standards for health passes.
