Jake Hoffman said during debate, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/news\/local-news\/az-senate-calls-on-mayes-to-resign-hobbs-calls-ags-comments-inappropriate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KNXV-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments even drew a frown from Democratic Gov. Senate Majority Leader John Kavanagh, the Republican who sponsored the resolution, said.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution calls on Mayes to retract what she said, clarify what is allowed under Arizona law, and then quit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Her statements were wrong, dangerous, and fundamentally inconsistent with Arizona law,&rdquo; Kavanagh said in a statement. &ldquo;When the state&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >top law enforcement officer implies<\/a> that police officers may be lawful targets, the Senate has a duty to act.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Mayes said Arizona&rsquo;s &ldquo;Stand Your Ground&rdquo; law allows the use of lethal force when threatened, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/krcrtv.com\/news\/nation-world\/arizona-ag-suggests-states-self-defense-laws-allow-residents-to-shoot-ice-agents-kris-mayes-minnesota-immigration-lethal-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KRCR-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s kind of a recipe for disaster because you have these masked federal officers with very little identification, sometimes no identification, wearing plain clothes and masks,&rdquo; Mayes said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And we have a Stand Your Ground law that says that if you reasonably believe that your life is in danger and you&rsquo;re in your house or your car or on your property, that you can defend yourself with lethal force,&rdquo; Mayes said.<\/p>\n<p>Mayes said ICE agents are &ldquo;very poorly trained,&rdquo; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/22\/us-news\/arizona-ag-wildly-suggests-residents-can-shoot-masked-ice-agents-under-states-self-defense-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mayes said she was not encouraging violence, but only stating the facts.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you&rsquo;re being attacked by someone who is not identified as a peace officer &mdash; how do you know?&rdquo; she said, adding that &ldquo;real cops don&rsquo;t wear masks.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I mean, if somebody comes at me wearing a mask, by the way, I&rsquo;m a gun owner, and I can&rsquo;t tell whether they&rsquo;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won&#039;t Enforce COVID Curfew\">police officer<\/a>, what am I supposed to do?
