John Manley for a bold naval success off Boston: Manley had captured two British transports, the Happy Return and the Norfolk, while cruising in a chartered schooner (part of an early Continental naval effort that included the Hannah). After taking prize crews, Manley unexpectedly faced a better-armed British schooner and convoy with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rescue-operation-launched-for-astronauts-stuck-in-space\/\" title=\"Rescue Operation Launched for Astronauts Stuck in Space\">reduced crew<\/a> and many prisoners aboard; the prisoners assisted, the British ultimately fled to Boston, and Manley reached Plymouth with only minor damage and one wounded. Washington\u2019s letter commended his courage, promised a stronger warship when available, urged him to stay in the Hancock for the cruise, recruit his complement to about 40 men, and act as commodore by organizing other armed schooners. George <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/George%20Washington\">Washington<\/a> writes to Capt. John Manley of Marblehead to congratulate him for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/American%20Revolution\">capturing<\/a> British transports off Plymouth and praise him for his boldness. According to the U.S. Naval Institute, Manley&rsquo;s first <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usni.org\/magazines\/proceedings\/1926\/august\/captain-john-manley-continental-navy\">connection<\/a> with the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/Navy\">Navy<\/a> came from his use of a schooner named <em>Hannah<\/em>, which was fitted and commanded by Nicholas Broughton, who was commissioned by Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Manley&rsquo;s schooner was chartered along with others in the fall of 1775. This too was at Washington&rsquo;s initiative. Manley was paid $1.00 per ton per month for the use of his ship. Washington undertook this effort in the name of the &ldquo;United Colonies of North America.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 25, Manley was cruising off Boston when he sighted the ship <em>Happy Return<\/em>. Giving chase, he took it in full sight of the English fleet at anchor in Nantasket Roads. Manley then placed a prize crew on the <em>Happy Return <\/em>and started to convoy it to Plymouth. But off Cohasset, he sighted a Boston-bound brig. As Manley bore down on her, she struck her colors to him, proving to be the <em>Norfolk<\/em>. He then placed a prize crew on the <em>Norfolk <\/em>and set off with his two prizes, only to then spot a British armed schooner and a convoy of two small provision vessels coming rapidly toward him.<\/p>\n<p>The schooner was more heavily armed and full of men. By then, Manley had depleted his crew to man his captured ships, leaving only two officers and 16 men, along with numerous prisoners. Manley moved his ship and waited for the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>A sharp battle ensued. To Manley&rsquo;s great surprise, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jan-6-convicts-greeted-with-cheers-theres-a-patriot-washington-examiner\/\" title=\".... 6 convicts greeted with cheers: \u2018There\u2019s a patriot!\u2019 - Washington Examiner\">prisoners &#038;ldquo<\/a>;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >lent great support&#038;rdquo<\/a>; to him and his men and &ldquo;did as much as they dared do in such circumstances.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The British fled to Boston while Manley made what speed he could for Plymouth. His casualties were slight. When he arrived that evening, he reported only one man wounded along with some slightly damaged rigging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>George Washington to Capt. John Manley, Jan. 28, 1776<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cambridge, Massachusetts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I received your agreeable Letter of the 26th instant giveing an account of your haveing taken &amp; Carried into Plymouth two of the Enemys transports.
