That claim is misleading because many detention centers in Minnesota are operated locally, not by the state DOC. Under state law the DOC must notify ICE about felony releases, but the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility \u2014 the state\u2019s largest jail, run by the Hennepin County sheriff \u2014 now refuses to cooperate with ICE. Most county sheriffs lack formal policies on ICE cooperation; the new York Times reports only at least seven of 87 counties have explicit agreements to work with ICE. While the jail had historically assisted immigration enforcement, that partnership has been gradually wound down by former Sheriff Dave Hutchinson. Now, under Sheriff Dawanna Witt, the jail&rsquo;s policy is to refuse to work with ICE, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/22\/us\/ice-minnesota-inmates.html#:~:text=Sheriffs%20in%20at%20least%20seven,with%20ICE%20on%20immigration%20enforcement.&amp;text=Under%20those%20partnerships%2C%20jail%20officials,agents%20to%20help%20facilitate%20deportations.\">according <\/a>to the <em>New York Times<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gov. They have broken into the homes of elderly citizens without warrants to drag them outside in freezing temperatures.
