Rutte also urged NATO to strengthen security in the Arctic and said he had no mandate to negotiate on Greenland for Denmark,while praising President Trump for raising European defense spending. On Ukraine,he warned that Ukrainian air defenses are strained by heavy Russian drone and missile attacks and pressed allies to dig into their own stockpiles to supply more interceptors. In a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/news-and-events\/events\/transcripts\/2026\/01\/26\/remarks-by-nato-secretary-general-mark-rutte-at-the-meeting-of-the-european-parliaments-committee-on-security-and-defence?selectedLocale=\">speech and Q-and-A session<\/a> to a pair of European Union committees in Brussels, Rutte laid out a harsh reality to EU lawmakers, warning that their discussion of creating a European army independent of the U.S. is folly.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If anyone thinks here, again, that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the U.S., keep on dreaming. You can&rsquo;t,&rdquo; Rutte said. &ldquo;We need each other. And why do we need each other? For one thing, it would cost far more than the 5% of GDP in defense spending NATO countries have pledged to achieve by 2035. &ldquo;Those who you are pleading for that, forget that. You can never get there with 5%. It will be 10%,&rdquo; Rutte said. &ldquo;&#8203;&#8203;You have to build up your own nuclear capability. That costs billions and billions of euros. You will lose then in that scenario; you would lose the ultimate guarantor of our freedom, which is the U.S. nuclear umbrella. So, hey, good luck.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE ARCTIC: &lsquo;I THINK HE&rsquo;S RIGHT&rsquo;:<\/strong> Despite Trump announcing that, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, he had secured a framework agreement for total U.S. access to Greenland, Rutte made clear he had no authority to do that. &ldquo;I have no mandate to negotiate on behalf of Denmark, so I didn&rsquo;t, and I will not.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Rutte said, he focused on the need for NATO to do much more to secure the entire Arctic region and on how to prevent Russia and China from gaining access &ldquo;in a military sense or an economic sense&rdquo; to the region, not just Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;President Trump, by the way, and I will defend him,&rdquo; Rutte said. &ldquo;I really feel that he deserves some defense. He was the one during Trump 45 who already said there is an issue with Arctic security. And again, he did so when he came back into office in January. And I think he&rsquo;s right. There is an issue with the Arctic region.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Rutte, who some in Europe have dubbed the &ldquo;Trump Whisperer&rdquo; for his ability to get in Trump&rsquo;s ear, acknowledged that his praise of the man who insulted and threatened Europe with a menacing speech at Davos just days ago wasn&rsquo;t sitting well with his audience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I know I&rsquo;m irritating a lot of you again, but I think so, because as I said, also in Davos, the 2% reached by all NATO countries now at the end of 2025 would never, ever, ever have happened without Trump,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Hey, listen, if somebody is doing good stuff&hellip; and President Trump is doing a lot of good stuff, I believe.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON UKRAINE: &lsquo;YOU HAVE TO DIG INTO YOUR OWN STOCKPILES&rsquo;: <\/strong>Rutte gently suggested that if Europe really wanted to show its resolve, the countries supporting Ukraine should dig deeper into their own stockpile for interceptor missiles to blunt Russia&rsquo;s relentless drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and civilian targets, including apartment buildings and churches.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/2016105646005899394?s=20\">posted on X<\/a> this morning that Russia conducted a &ldquo;brutal drone attack&rdquo; overnight on Odesa. &ldquo;The Russians launched more than 50 drones at the city, with energy infrastructure and civilian facilities as the primary target. Five residential buildings were damaged &hellip; As of now, dozens of people are reported injured, including children.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Russians are really heavily targeting this infrastructure, civilian infrastructure, and therefore leaving Ukrainians, literally in the freezing cold, it&rsquo;s without heat, without light, without water,&rdquo; Rutte said. &ldquo;This is now, I would argue, the harshest winter for Ukrainians in over a decade. Bigger than Venezuela,&rdquo; while suggesting Iran has indicated it wants to negotiate. &ldquo;They want to make a deal. I know so. They called on numerous occasions. They want to talk.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been contemplating the possibility of launching airstrikes against Iran for about two weeks, but the targets and overall objectives of military action are unclear. At the height of the street demonstrations in Iran, in which Iranian security forces killed thousands of protesters, Trump urged the protesters on, saying, &ldquo;Help is on the way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4433614\/abraham-lincoln-carrier-strike-group-middle-east-possible-iran-attack\/\"><strong>ABRAHAM LINCOLN CARRIER STRIKE GROUP NOW IN MIDDLE EAST AHEAD OF POSSIBLE IRAN ATTACK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO TODAY: INCHING TOWARD A PARTIAL SHUTDOWN: <\/strong>Outraged Democrats and frustrated Republicans are trying to reach some sort of compromise to avoid a partial government shutdown that would begin Saturday, unless six critical funding bills can pass the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, infuriated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >aggressive enforcement tactic employed<\/a> by ICE officers in Minneapolis and the shooting death of 37-year-old ICU under <strong>Alex Pretti,<\/strong> are demanding that funding for the Department of Homeland Security be stripped from the $1.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-counter-biden-with-928-billion-plan-for-actual-infrastructure\/\" title=\"Republicans Counter Biden With 8 Billion Plan For \u2018Actual Infrastructure\u2019\">3 trillion spending package<\/a> and negotiated separately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What this reminds me of is defund the police. Michael Flood<\/strong> (R-NE) said on Fox Business. &ldquo;[Senate Majority] Leader [John] Thune is going to do what&rsquo;s right for America. We cannot allow the government to shut down.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;ll make the right call, ultimately, as to how he proceeds,&rdquo; Flood told Fox Business anchor <strong>Maria Bartiromo<\/strong>. &ldquo;It would be very poor judgment for the Democrats to allow us to go into a shutdown on this defund the police effort.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[It&rsquo;s] up to Majority Leader Thune whether or not he will work with us to separate out the Homeland Security Bill, negotiate some new amendments to that that would prevent the sort of coldblooded murder of Alex Pretti that happened on Saturday,&rdquo; <strong>Sen. Chris Coons<\/strong> (D-DE) said on MS Now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think there is a path forward here for us to fund the rest of the government if Republicans will take it. And I think we will be advancing a discreet and clear set of things that need to be done, like body cameras, like ending masked agents,&rdquo; Coons said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s being worked through right now by our caucus.
