In 2015, China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-34665539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> it had decided to scrap the policy and replace it with a two-child limit, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-57303592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lasted<\/a> until 2021 in favor of a three-child policy.<\/p>\n<p>While the one-child policy officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-end-of-chinas-one-child-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ended<\/a> in January 2016, experts have warned that it has contributed to ongoing demographic issues such as a heavily skewed ratio of men to women, and having a shortage of younger relatives able to provide care for a continuously aging population, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/31\/world\/asia\/china-will-feel-one-child-policys-effects-for-decades-experts-say.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in October 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, China&rsquo;s one-child policy sometimes resulted in forced abortions and mothers&rsquo; deaths, the Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2012-jun-15-la-fg-china-abortions-20120616-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in June 2012. People over the age of 60 now make up over 20 percent of China&rsquo;s total population of 1.4 billion people, and could account for a whopping half of the population by 2100, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/01\/china\/china-one-child-anniversary-intl-hnk-vis-dst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> on Jan. 1, citing projections from the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has recently begun introducing new taxes on condoms, birth control pills, and other contraceptives in an effort to bolster China&rsquo;s population, Fortune <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/16\/china-taxing-condoms-demographics-fertility-one-child-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> on Jan. 16.
