involved in anti-ICE uprising at Minneapolis church<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The Legal Rights Center, for example, is one of the Minnesota-based organizations helping to bail out arrestees and is soliciting donations on behalf of a newly established bail fund, set up specifically to assist anti-ICE activists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/number-of-illegal-aliens-in-detainment-centers-up-more-than-50-under-biden\/\" title=\"Number of Illegal Aliens In Detainment ...s Up More Than 50% Under Biden\">illegal immigrants detained<\/a> in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>The center, generously funded by government grants, is promoting the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/pbfmn.org\/\">People&rsquo;s Bail Fund of Minnesota<\/a> through Know Your Rights MN, a Legal Rights Center project providing informational resources for those navigating the state&rsquo;s judicial system.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the project&rsquo;s website was updated to feature a link to the bail fund, which just <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mblsportal.sos.mn.gov\/Business\/SearchDetails?filingGuid=cb39ea4a-ff4a-f011-9093-00155d01c440\">secured nonprofit organization status<\/a> days ago. In the group&rsquo;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DTUTCnkDYoK\">501(c)(3) announcement,<\/a> the charity noted that there was much deliberation that went into deciding to become a tax-exempt entity, given that the bail fund is fully &ldquo;community-led.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">People&rsquo;s Bail Fund of Minnesota announced it bailed out its first client in July, telling supporters, &ldquo;A community member is out of custody thanks to you and your donations!&rdquo; (Instagram)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the summer, PBFMN emerged to quickly fill a space in Minnesota&rsquo;s bail fund sector that was left open by the Minnesota Freedom Fund. PBFMN&rsquo;s business operations began about two months after the Minnesota Freedom Fund, the bail fund previously <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/1267555018128965643\">promoted<\/a> by former Vice President Kamala Harris amid the 2020 George Floyd riots, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mnfreedomfund.org\/about\/\">announced<\/a> that it is transitioning away from &ldquo;transactional bail and immigration bond payments&rdquo; toward broader &ldquo;community power-building.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Know Your Rights MN, under its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourrightsmn.org\/bail\/\">bail section<\/a>, lists PBFMN as one of the most efficient ways to now post bail in Minnesota, describing it as &ldquo;a revolving fund &hellip; that pays criminal bail and immigration bonds.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeffy.com\/en-US\/donation-form\/free-people-from-bail\">donation portal<\/a>, contributions to the bail fund can free many defendants over time. When an arrestee freed by the bail fund comes back to court, the group eventually gets the bail money back at the end of criminal proceedings and is able to use it to spring another suspect from jail.<\/p>\n<p>Entailing &ldquo;relatively simple&rdquo; paperwork, the approval process simply requires a referral for bail support submitted <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScLGp14RhNEpuEEBN3oR1RVKYSOgL5xdv5kQxfXau_OXadYcg\/viewform\">via Google Forms<\/a>, explains Know Your Rights MN.<\/p>\n<p>PBFMN is actively accepting requests for &ldquo;ICE protest cases&rdquo; in Hennepin County, according to its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/peoplesbailfundmn\/\">Instagram account<\/a>. However, at this time, the bail fund can <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/pbfmn.org\/bail-support\/\">only cover cases<\/a> involving misdemeanor charges, but it may expand its services if enough donors back the bail fund.<\/p>\n<p>Know Your Rights MN not only advertises the bail fund, but also urges its followers to donate directly to PBFMN and other <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/legalrightscenter.org\/restorativejustice\/\">&ldquo;restorative justice&rdquo;<\/a> organizations, promoting them as &ldquo;actions you can take&rdquo; to support the abolition of pre-trial detention. According to Know Your Rights MN, cash bail &ldquo;disproportionately impacts Black, Latine, Indigenous, and low-income people,&rdquo; making it &ldquo;a crime to be poor in Minnesota.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4424440\/blm-coalition-anti-ice-shutdown-minneapolis-church-service\/\">BLM COALITION BEHIND ANTI-ICE SHUTDOWN OF MINNEAPOLIS CHURCH SERVICE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackimmigrantsbailfund.com\/\">Black Immigrants Bail Fund<\/a>, which works to ensure that &ldquo;EVERY black immigrant&rdquo; in ICE custody is set free, and the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtqfund.org\/\">LGBTQ Freedom Fund<\/a>, a bail fund that posts the immigration bonds of queer migrants, are among the other organizations that Know Your Rights MN is advertising, with the long-term objective of &ldquo;dismantling oppressive systems like bail.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Spearheading the movement&rsquo;s end-cash-bail efforts in Minnesota is Know Your Rights MN&rsquo;s parent organization, the Legal Rights Center, a criminal defense law firm focused on &ldquo;racial equity&rdquo; and representing indigent clients, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/legalrightscenter.org\/defense\/\">preferably<\/a> &ldquo;people of color.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Keith Ellison (D-MN), a vocal opponent of ICE&rsquo;s operations in Minnesota, once <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.house.mn.gov\/hinfo\/swkly\/2003-04\/sw303.pdf\">led the legal boutique<\/a>. A pro bono practice, the Legal Rights Center <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/legalrightscenter.org\/\">touts<\/a> that it is &ldquo;financially supported by the State of Minnesota.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The center received nearly $5.7 million in government grants between 2021 and 2024, accounting for roughly two-thirds of its overall revenue, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ag.state.mn.us\/Charity\/Search\/CHR_GeneralInfo.asp?FederalID=410961835&amp;Yr=PREV1&amp;cmdSearch=View#Finances\">financial records<\/a> from Ellison&rsquo;s office. The reported data, however, does not specify if that funding came from federal, state, or local sources.<\/p>\n<p>More than $777,000 of those funds came from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.highergov.com\/awardee\/legal-rights-center-inc-12634827\/\">government contract analytics<\/a>. Dozens of anti-ICE activists in Minneapolis have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2026\/01\/11\/anti-ice-protests-across-u-s-demand-justice-in-goods-death\/\">reportedly<\/a> been arrested in recent weeks on charges ranging from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ICEgov\/status\/2013037587766648923\">assaulting police officers<\/a> to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ICEgov\/status\/2012235676499283992\">refusing lawful orders<\/a> to disperse.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/racial-equity-group-funded-by-minnesota-taxpayers-asks-for-donations-to-bail-fund-freeing-anti-ice-agitators\/\">report<\/a>, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) encouraged residents to resist ICE, claiming that agents are indiscriminately &ldquo;kidnapping people with no due process,&rdquo; on the evening before Know Your Rights MN&rsquo;s website was redesigned to display the bail fund.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Blackbird Revolt distributes free &ldquo;Abolish ICE&rdquo; merchandise, including protest posters, T-shirts, crewnecks, bandanas, and tote bags, in exchange for small donations to suggested community groups. (Instagram)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Blackbird Revolt, a design studio making <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/blackbirdrevolt.com\/abolishice\/\">&ldquo;Abolish ICE&rdquo; merchandise<\/a>, had <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTjBZ6_CY2O\">partnered<\/a> with the Legal Rights Center to overhaul Know Your Rights MN&rsquo;s website, its bail page in particular, on Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p>As a resource hub, Know Your Rights MN provides legal guidance <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourrightsmn.org\/protest\/\">on protesting<\/a>, including &ldquo;general tips&rdquo; pertaining to evading law enforcement detection during demonstrations, such as being aware of surveillance cameras, social media monitoring, cellphone data, and one&rsquo;s own identifiable traits like tattoos, gait, and eye color.<\/p>\n<p>The group offers <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourrightsmn.org\/\/engagewithus\/\">&ldquo;legal empowerment workshops&rdquo;<\/a> as well, hosted at various locations around Minneapolis to train youth as young as elementary school students in advocacy, organizing, and &ldquo;protecting your rights when interacting with police.&rdquo; Such training sessions additionally teach children about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourrightsmn.org\/expungement\/\">expunging<\/a> criminal records, accomplice liability, and rules around <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourrightsmn.org\/searchseizure\/\">search and seizure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the organizations stoking anti-ICE agitation have raked in ample funding from top grantmaking foundations on the Left.
