The doll drew praise from some autistic people and influencers who said visible adaptive tools and behaviors can affirm and normalize their experiences. Critics argued the design risks turning autism into a visible checklist and reinforcing stereotypes, with some saying portrayal should avoid implying autism has a single look and that any Barbie could be autistic. The rollout has provoked predictable controversy given Barbie&#8217;s history of sparking debate, and reactions on social media have been sharply divided. autistic TikTok content creator Chlo&eacute; Hayden said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@chloeshayden\/video\/7594382864125316370?is_from_webapp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope y&rsquo;all understand how genuinely important this doll is.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, it has also stirred critics.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2026\/01\/16\/autistic-barbie-mattel-representation-reactions\/88179501007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> reported last week, Krystyn Sommer, a psychology researcher and autistic mother in Australia, took to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DTZ8B3kkl4Q\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> to point out that what many might see as representation might actually be distorting perceptions of autism.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It actually turns autism into something you can see, which it is not something you can see. It is invisible,&rdquo; she said.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Representation does two things at once. It can affirm some people and define the boundaries for others.
