House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith indicated a second reconciliation bill is unlikely to pass Congress this year, and Bedford argued that the White House &#8211; specifically former President Trump &#8211; would need to back the move for it to gain traction.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Study Committee has floated a broad &#8220;reconciliation 2.0&#8221; affordability proposal, but Bedford suggested lawmakers should narrow the package to measures wiht broad public appeal. One example she highlighted as popular is allowing first-time homebuyers to use retirement savings for a down payment. She also noted that contentious items like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-seem-to-understand-they-could-lose-house-in-2026\/\" title=\"Republicans &#039;seem to ...&#039; Bedford said. &ldquo;It would be less ambitious than the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the reconciliation package from last year, but Republicans seem to understand that this is probably their last shot for a few years to get anything done legislatively, given the likelihood the Democrats will retake the House in November.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/event\/which-party-will-win-the-house-in-2026\">Polymarket odds<\/a> on Thursday afternoon gave the Democrats a 79% chance of winning a House majority this year, a number that has slowly but steadily risen since the opposition party won two gubernatorial elections and other key races last fall.<\/p>\n<p><em>Washington Examiner<\/em> Executive Editor Bob Cusack said Tuesday that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4426593\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-act-faces-similar-obamacare-struggles-2026-bob-cusack\/\">Republicans&rsquo; strategy for the midterm elections<\/a> should be to win over public opinion on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act because it &ldquo;isn&rsquo;t popular.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Bedford said the Republican Study Committee is &ldquo;keeping the flame of hope alive&rdquo; for a new reconciliation bill, as it has released a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/rsc-pfluger.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rsc-leads-reconciliation-20-making-american-dream-affordable-again\">&ldquo;sweeping proposal on affordability&rdquo;<\/a> that members believe can be accomplished via reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4427017\/trump-uncharacteristic-big-beautiful-branding-mistake-economy\/\"><strong>TRUMP&rsquo;S UNCHARACTERISTIC, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BRANDING MISTAKE ON THE ECONOMY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bedford added that one of the proposals with potential for &ldquo;broad appeal&rdquo; is allowing people to use their retirement savings for down payments on a first-time home purchase.
