Mikie Sherrill said in her first national interview since taking office that federal immigration agents amount to a &#8220;proto-militia&#8221; President Trump is developing, criticizing recent ICE tactics and accusing agents of acting unlawfully and with loyalty to the president rather than the Constitution. Her remarks, on MS Now&#8217;s Morning Joe, responded to an internal ICE memo (dated May 12, 2025 and obtained by the AP) having mentioned that agents can use administrative warrants to enter homes without judicial warrants to carry out deportations. <\/p>\n<p>Homeland Security defended the use of administrative warrants, but Sherrill argued the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >federal directive oversteps legal boundaries<\/a> and vowed New Jersey would use state resources and training to limit cooperation with ICE, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/newsom-vetoes-bill-preventing-some-illegal-immigrant-inmates-from-being-handed-to-ice\/\" title=\"Newsom rejects bill blocking transfer of certain undocumented inmates to ....\">protect undocumented immigrants<\/a>, and challenge federal actions in court. on Greenland after Rutte meeting: Trump<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The governor&rsquo;s comments came in response to an internal ICE memo dated May 12, 2025, recently obtained by the<em> <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-arrests-warrants-minneapolis-trump-00d0ab0338e82341fd91b160758aeb2d\"><em>Associated Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The document asserts that federal agents can <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/4428622\/memo-ice-officers-power-forcibly-enter-homes\/\">forcibly enter<\/a> homes without a judicial warrant, relying instead on administrative warrants to execute deportation orders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Homeland Security spokespeople have defended the use of administrative warrants and recognized the toil in immigration enforcement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This should come as no surprise to anyone,&rdquo; Sherrill said on MS Now&rsquo;s <em>Morning Joe<\/em>. &ldquo;We have seen for months this proto-militia that Trump is developing, acting unlawfully on our streets.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As her first week has been dominated by a cross-country clash over federal law enforcement tactics, Sherrill launched staunch criticism of Trump in her interview.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill has frequently pointed to perceived parallels between Trump&rsquo;s actions and the grievances against the king of England listed in the Declaration of Independence. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-revolver-news-exposed-fedsurrection-on-jan-6\/\" title=\"Donald ...: Revolver News exposed \u2018fedsurrection\u2019 on Jan. 6\">claimed federal agents<\/a> are no longer acting as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/non-law-enforcement-agencies-like-irs-and-epa-spend-billions-on-guns-and-ammo-watchdog-says\/\" title=\"IRS and EPA spend billions on firearms and ammunition, says watchdog.\">traditional law enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These agents are acting at the behest of Trump,&rdquo; Sherrill said. &ldquo;We are hearing, we have heard for months about loyalty oaths to the president, not the Constitution.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The governor vowed to use the Garden State&rsquo;s own resources to check federal power, highlighting the state&rsquo;s law enforcement training as a shield to protect illegal immigrants from being detained and deported.<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill had previously stated she would continue <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2026\/01\/new-jerseys-outgoing-governor-vetoes-anti-ice-bill-saying-it-could-undermine-existing-protections-00736289\">state-level protections<\/a> that limit local cooperation with ICE, a policy initiated by her predecessor, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/phil-murphy\/\">Phil Murphy<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Here in New Jersey, we have the best-trained police force in the nation,&rdquo; Sherrill said. &ldquo;We are going to make sure we are acting in the public&rsquo;s interest to keep people safe. I will continue to fight these things in court.
