Chuck Grassley (R\u2011Iowa) clarified after a leaked constituent letter circulated that he is not opposed to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which woudl require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. Grassley said on X that his letter criticized federal efforts to &#8220;federalize&#8221; state elections (citing the For the People Act and the failed Freedom to Vote Act) and reiterated his support for voter ID, while also saying he has worked wiht Iowa secretary of State paul Pate to press the Biden management over <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >withheld immigration\/citizenship voter data<\/a>. Some online users read the leaked letter as opposition to the SAVE Act; Sen. As a senator, I have opposed partisan efforts in Washington, D.C. to federalize elections in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stacey-abrams-nominated-for-nobel-peace-prize\/\" title=\"Stacey Abrams Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize\">undermine election integrity<\/a>,&rdquo; Grassley&rsquo;s letter reads.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley addressed the letter <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/2013980147020423187?s=20\">in an X post on Wednesday<\/a> to say that he supports the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, known as the SAVE Act.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Dont believe everything u read on the internet Im not opposed 2 SAVE Act In fact Ive been fighting alongside Iowa Scty of State Pate 2hold Biden admin accountable for their hiding immigration\/citizenship voter data in 2024 election ELECTIONS MUST B SECURE W ONLY CITIZENS VOTING,&rdquo; Grassley wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley&rsquo;s letter goes on to refer to the For the People Act, which passed the House of Representatives in 2021, and the Freedom to Vote Act, which was the Senate&rsquo;s amended version that did not pass the upper chamber. You can&rsquo;t default to federalism when federal law is itself the problem.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the failed Freedom to Vote Act allowed for a bank statement or utility bill as identification sufficient to vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n<p>Voter registration in Iowa <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sos.iowa.gov\/voter-registration-totals-county\">increased by over 85,000<\/a> between 2023 and 2024.
