The incident coincided with intensified clashes between the SDF and government forces and prompted the SDF to withdraw from Al-Hol camp and redeploy to protect nearby towns. The SDF and Damascus had signed a ceasefire on Sunday that quickly faltered; a new four-day ceasefire was announced amid ongoing disputes over violations. Under the January 18 agreement, the SDF agreed to integrate into the Syrian military and transfer its territory, infrastructure and ISIS detention facilities to government control. The Trump management has shifted its posture toward the Syrian transitional government, with U.S. envoy Tom Barrack saying Damascus is now positioned to assume counterterrorism responsibilities and that the original U.S.-SDF partnership has largely expired. President Trump said he worked with Syrian authorities to stop the prison break, posted praise from foreign leaders, and asserted the U.S. is trying to protect the Kurds as the political and security situation remains fluid.

Formerly US-backed Kurds blame peace talk breakdown for ISIS prisoner escape

The Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-led coalition once backed by the United States, has blamed a reported prison break on the breakdown in peace talks with Syria’s transitional government for a reported prison break involving ISIS fighters.

At least 120 ISIS prisoners escaped prisons in SDF territory on Monday.
