Using a $500,000 home with a 20% down payment as an example, payments dropped from roughly $2,672 to $2,414 per month &#8211; about $3,000 less in interest over a year and roughly $90,000 over teh life of a typical mortgage, according to reporter Matt Egan.<\/p>\n<p>The article attributes the decline to several factors: the Trump administration&#8217;s plan for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy $200 billion in mortgages (which can help keep rates lower), a lower Consumer Price Index (2.6%) that gave the Federal Reserve room to cut rates, and falling home prices in many markets.
