The inquiry also comes after a House Oversight Committee report accused former Chief Pamela Smith of pressuring commanders to alter numbers; Smith resigned effective Dec. 31, 2025, and denied ordering changes.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll said MPD will improve officer training on crime classification and has created an audit team to review crime reports for proper classification. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked the inspector general to investigate after findings from the House committee and the Department of Justice raised concerns. However, the top federal prosecutor noted that the actions do not amount to criminal conduct and thus advised MPD to address the matter internally.<\/p>\n<p>Pirro&rsquo;s office launched the investigation in August, around the time when President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> federalized local police and activated the National Guard to fight crime in the district.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll said the department would be taking several steps to address the underlying issues, including improved training for officers to classify crimes and a newly created audit team that would examine crime data reports to ensure they are properly classified.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/activists-erupt-after-police-kill-black-ohio-girl-video-shows-cop-protected-woman-from-knife-attack\/\" title=\"Activists Erupt After Police Kill Black Ohio Girl; Video Shows Cop Protected Woman From \u2018Knife\u2019 Attack\">interim police chief<\/a> took over from Pamela Smith, who <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3910141\/mpd-dc-police-chief-pamela-smith-steps-down\/\">announced her resignation<\/a> last month just before the House Oversight Committee <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3917280\/oversight-dc-police-pamela-smith-crime-data\/\">released a damning report<\/a> that confirmed her involvement in manipulating crime statistics. The report outlined how the then-police chief used &ldquo;fear, intimidation, threats, and retaliation&rdquo; against police commanders who presented her with crime increases.<\/p>\n<p>Smith denied she directed any officer to change the police department&rsquo;s numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/muriel-bowser\/\">Muriel Bowser<\/a> appointed Carroll to replace the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uvalde-school-board-will-consider-recommendation-to-fire-embattled-police-chief\/\" title=\"Uvalde School Board Will Consider Recommendation To Fire Embattled Police Chief\">embattled police chief<\/a> following the report.
