His ideas include sending expanded Obamacare subsidies directly to households (and urging GOP versatility on the Hyde Amendment to secure a deal) and restricting private investment firms from buying residential properties. Some proposals would require new legislation, while others-such as delaying certain tariffs-could counteract his own policies set for 2025. The White House says the measures are part of a broader effort that has already helped cool inflation and lower prices for many essentials. Critics, including democrats, call the push a last-minute scramble or political catch-up,while some experts warn voters have not yet felt macroeconomic gains and that attention-grabbing foreign policy moves may dilute the affordability message. The governance insists these are long-standing priorities, not reactive politics, but uncertainty remains about whether the proposals will translate into tangible relief for voters.

Trump is throwing affordability ‘spaghetti at the wall’ — will anything stick for the midterm elections?

President Donald Trump is emptying a clip on affordability, a clear sign that economic concerns will dictate control of both congressional majorities in the 2026 midterm elections.

Since last November, when Democrats swept the major off-year elections, the president has unleashed a multitude of proposals to allay voters’ economic fears.
