British and international outlets have suggested Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and roughly 20 close allies have plotted routes and assembled assets abroad in case of a regime collapse, a pattern echoed by past transfers of deposed leaders to Russia. Analysts, including Janatan Sayeh, however, doubt Khamenei would willingly flee accept under catastrophic circumstances given his long tenure and security concerns; they also warn a more likely outcome coudl be leadership &#8220;decapitation&#8221; or targeted removal rather than an organized escape. At the time, Iran and Ankara had better relations, so it kind of made sense. Then the rumors resurfaced again that Venezuela was the second option for regime officials to flee,&rdquo; Sayeh said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s no longer an option. So if they had to flee somewhere, it would be Moscow because I doubt China would take them in, and I doubt they would want to go.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/article\/iran-ayatollah-khamenei-escape-moscow-protests-revealed-h5f95ctb5?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqft1XHVB13YX1AETu6tCMI34d9fcTMDEEFACcTajwC8EDfwfFRyxGXJ9AIIrfg%3D&amp;gaa_ts=696156f9&amp;gaa_sig=WITxp_lNNbeEVHtIWOWStpUsEkCy_4n2AqzzCYTXXDS5JgqbSW4dKsamfwu5zvypW5nawjQk7fn1lrCNSM57PA%3D%3D\">report<\/a> from British outlet the<em> Times<\/em> asserted just that this week, alleging Khamenei was prepared to flee Tehran to Moscow in the event of a total collapse of his regime.<\/p>\n<p>Citing an &ldquo;intelligence source&rdquo; with knowledge of the matter, the report said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ayatollah-iran-in-no-hurry-to-see-u-s-return-to-nuclear-deal\/\" title=\"Ayatollah: ... in no hurry to see U.S. return to nuclear deal\">supreme leader<\/a> has &ldquo;plotted an exit route out of Tehran&rdquo; with approximately 20 allies, including plans for &ldquo;gathering assets, properties abroad and cash to facilitate their safe passage.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Such an arrangement would hardly be without precedent &mdash; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3851225\/syria-ahmed-al-sharaa-meets-putin-moscow-assad-haunts\/\">deposed Syrian dictator Bashar Assad <\/a>made a similar flight to Moscow following the collapse of his government in late 2024. Leaving Iran is an unthinkable option, save the most catastrophic situation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He would, of course, prioritize his own life &mdash; but for him to actually flee the country, the situation needs to be really, really dire,&rdquo; Sayeh said. &ldquo;I can absolutely see the scenario where he doesn&rsquo;t have the opportunity to escape.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And that is assuming regime change is going to happen in a way that we&rsquo;re not going to see leadership decapitation first,&rdquo; he continued, asserting that a &ldquo;possible scenario for regime change might be similar to what we saw in the 12-day war.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sayeh postulated that it is possible America will decide to &ldquo;decapitate the leadership and again let the protests to really take place from bottom up.
