In the aftermath, the government deployed large numbers of military forces and pro-government paramilitary colectivos to patrol streets that largely resembled a ghost town, as many residents stayed home out of fear and public transit and shops shut down. Videos showed celebrations among the diaspora, but inside venezuela widespread anxiety and harassment by colectivos were reported. Vice President Delcy rodríguez assumed de facto authority while insisting Maduro remains the country’s president, creating mixed messages alongside U.S. statements. Washington hopes the shock of the raid will pressure Venezuela’s leadership to accept U.S. terms, though officials acknowledge Rodríguez is likely only a temporary, workable interlocutor rather than a permanent solution.

Venezuelan government reasserts control over Caracas after Maduro arrest

The Venezuelan government reasserted its control over Caracas with military and paramilitary troops after the United States snatched its head of state on Saturday.

Caracas has been in disarray since the U.S.’s daring operation on Saturday, which saw U.S. aircraft and special forces bomb the capital, seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from one of the most heavily fortified positions in the country, then fly out without suffering a single death.
