James Talarico has raised more than $13 million since launching his U.S.Senate campaign last September, including $6.8 million in the fourth quarter, with 98% of contributions at $100 or less and teachers among the most common donors; he has pledged not to accept corporate PAC money and says more than 215,000 supporters have contributed. Despite the haul, Rep. Jasmine Crockett leads in early polling for the March Democratic primary: a Texas Southern University poll showed Crockett at 51% versus Talarico at 43% (6% undecided) and much higher name recognition (94% vs. 79%). Talarico, 36, is studying in seminary to become a pastor, is a former sixth\u2011grade teacher with a large TikTok following, and has out\u2011raised some rivals; crockett, a two\u2011term congresswoman known for viral moments, had roughly $4.6 million on hand as of the end of September. Both Democrats aim to unseat Republican Sen. Crockett&rsquo;s name recognition has her leading Talarico by 8 points in the primary, according to a poll by Texas Southern University last month.<\/p>\n<p>The poll, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/12\/texas-senate-democratic-primary-poll-jasmine-crockett-james-talarico\/\">reported by the <em>Texas Tribune<\/em><\/a>, showed 51% of likely Democratic voters plan to vote for Crockett, compared to just 43% who plan to vote for Talarico. The last 6% are undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico jumped into the race earlier this year, massively out-raising former Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/colin-allred\/\">Colin Allred<\/a>, who was the Democratic Senate nominee in 2024. Allred suspended his campaign just hours before Crockett announced her bid on the filing deadline for Texas last month.<\/p>\n<p>December&rsquo;s poll fielded 1,600 likely Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >primary voters<\/a> and was the first public survey released since Crockett jumped into the race. Crockett&rsquo;s name recognition came in with soaring numbers among likely primary voters at 94%, with Talarico at 79%.<\/p>\n<p>The poll came in closer than the previous <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/texassouthernnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/election2026.pdf\">October poll<\/a> by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University that showed Crockett with an 18% lead over Talarico.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico is in seminary, studying to become a pastor, while also serving as a member of the state House. The 36-year-old has 1.2 million followers on TikTok and is a former sixth-grade teacher in San Antonio. Just weeks before launching his campaign, Talarico joined <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-rogan\/\">Joe Rogan&rsquo;s<\/a> podcast to discuss his outlook as a Christian Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>Crockett has quickly risen to fame, serving her second term in the lower chamber, as the GOP has strived to make her the face of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman has had many viral moments on social media for her quick-witted comments. One of the most viewed instances was an argument between her and Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marjorie-taylor-greene\/\">Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a> (R-GA) during a committee hearing where the Texas Democrat referred to the Georgia Republican&rsquo;s &ldquo;bleach blonde, bad-built, butch body.&rdquo; Another instance went viral recently when someone asked her what she would say to Tesla CEO <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a>.
