The measure, led by Rep. Carlos Gimenez and Sen. Rick Scott, would have expanded the Miccosukee Tribe&#8217;s reserved territory to include the Osceola Camp in Everglades National Park and added protections against flooding. In his veto statement Trump said the camp was built without authorization, claimed it wasn&#8217;t the federal government&#8217;s responsibility to fix the area, and criticized the tribe for opposing his administration&#8217;s Everglades immigration detention project &#8211; dubbed &#8220;Alligator Alcatraz.&#8221; the tribe had intervened in litigation over the detention center on environmental and cultural grounds; proponents of the bill argued incorporation would help the tribe protect historic sites, manage water flow, and reduce flood risk. The bill was led by Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) in the lower chamber and Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rick-scott\/\">Rick Scott<\/a> (R-FL) in the upper chamber. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >tribe raised environmental concerns<\/a> and argued that the facility could interfere with its community and resources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My Administration is committed to preventing&nbsp;American taxpayers from funding projects for special interests, especially those that are unaligned with my Administration&rsquo;s policy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-administration-quietly-purges-ice-leaders-in-five-cities-sources\/\" title=\"Trump administration quietly purges ICE leaders in five cities: Sources\">removing violent criminal illegal aliens<\/a> from the country,&rdquo; Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also wrote that the Osceola Camp area was &ldquo;constructed in 1935, without authorization, in a low area that was raised with fill material.&rdquo; He said none of the structures are old enough to qualify for the National Register of Historic Places and that &ldquo;it is not the Federal Government&rsquo;s responsibility to pay to fix problems in an area that the Tribe has never been authorized to occupy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Miccosukee tribe has been one of several plaintiffs to challenge the construction of Alligator Alcatraz as the Trump administration continues to vouch for the Everglades immigration detention facility. Despite legal opposition from environmental groups and detained immigrants, the Trump administration scored a win in December as U.S. District Judge Kyle Dudek <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3955933\/florida-judge-rejects-injunction-close-alligator-alcatraz\/\">struck down<\/a> a detainee&rsquo;s injunction request to close the facility.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The facility&rsquo;s proximity to the Tribe&rsquo;s villages, sacred and ceremonial sites, traditional hunting grounds, and other lands protected by the Tribe raises significant concerns about environmental degradation and potential impacts to same caused by the construction and operation of a detention facility at the TNT Site,&rdquo; counsel for the tribe wrote of Alligator Alcatraz in the July <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flsd.692544\/gov.uscourts.flsd.692544.33.0.pdf\">court document<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Gimenez, who championed the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act in the House, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/gimenez.house.gov\/2025\/7\/u-s-house-passes-congressman-carlos-gimenez-s-bill-to-incorporate-osceola-camp-into-the-mra\">said<\/a> in July on the House floor that the bill &ldquo;ensures that the Miccosukee Tribe has the legal authority to manage, protect, and preserve their land &mdash; and continue their traditional way of life.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Osceola Camp is not only home to tribal members, but it is also a site of historical and cultural importance,&rdquo; Gimenez said. &ldquo;Including this land in the reserved area will empower the Tribe to protect their community, manage water flow into Everglades National Park, and raise structures within the camp to prevent catastrophic flooding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/4375466\/lauren-boebert-trump-veto-colorado-pipeline-epstein-retaliation\/\">BOEBERT SUGGESTS TRUMP VETOED COLORADO WATER PIPELINE BILL AS &lsquo;RETALIATION&rsquo; FOR EPSTEIN DISCHARGE PETITION<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&rsquo;s two vetoes were Trump&rsquo;s first of his second term.
