Jon Kyl announces dementia diagnosis<\/h1>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-title-line\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<div id=\"Brid_2458861\" class=\"tpd-featured-video bridtv\"><\/div>\n<p>Former Republican Arizona Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jon-kyl\/\">Jon Kyl<\/a> has been diagnosed with dementia, he announced in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The longtime public servant completed four full terms in the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-of-representatives\/\">House<\/a> from 1987 to 1995 and three full terms in the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\">Senate<\/a> from 1995 to 2013. He then briefly returned to the upper chamber in 2018 to fill the unexpired term of the late Republican Arizona Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-mccain\/\">John McCain<\/a>. I have been diagnosed with a neurological disease manifesting as dementia,&rdquo; Kyl said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My family and I now head down a path filled with moments of joy and increasing difficulties. I am grateful beyond expression for their love and support, in these coming days as in all the days of my life. Despite this diagnosis, I remain a very fortunate man,&rdquo; Kyl said.<\/p>\n<p>The former senator rose through the ranks of Senate leadership to serve as the minority Republican whip for three congresses at the end of his consecutive terms. In September 2018, former Arizona Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/doug-ducey\/\">Doug Ducey<\/a> appointed Kyl to fill McCain&rsquo;s vacancy. Kyl helped facilitate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh&rsquo;s confirmation before fully retiring from the Senate on Dec. 31, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Following his retirements in 2013 and 2018, Kyl joined Covington as a lobbyist, where he advocated clients such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/874594\/quick-spin-of-revolving-door-jon-kyl-back-at-his-old-lobbying-firm-after-four-months-in-senate\/\">PhRMA and Qualcomm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kyl, a former water law attorney, had the Kyl Center for Water Policy at Morrison Institute, a part of Arizona State University, named after him for his knowledge of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/las-vegas-moves-to-ban-certain-types-of-grass-in-conservation-effort\/\" title=\"Las Vegas Moves To Ban Certain Types Of Grass In Conservation Effort\">water policy<\/a> and law, according to <em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2025\/12\/30\/jon-kyl-diagnosed-with-dementia-to-withdraw-from-public-life\/87965953007\/\">The Arizona Republic<\/a><\/em>. Kyl is a graduate of the University of Arizona, which first brought him to the Grand Canyon state, and where he met his wife, Caryll.<\/p>\n<p>In his Tuesday statement, Kyl paid homage to former President Ronald Reagan, who was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reaganlibrary.gov\/reagans\/ronald-reagan\/reagans-letter-announcing-his-alzheimers-diagnosis\">diagnosed with Alzheimer&rsquo;s<\/a>, a form of dementia, toward the end of his life.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In a letter to the American people in similar circumstances, Ronald Reagan wrote that he was headed into &lsquo;the sunset of my life.&rsquo; Yet, he expressed confidence that, for America, there would &lsquo;always be a bright dawn ahead.&rsquo; I share Reagan&rsquo;s confidence about the future, for the country and for our state,&rdquo; Kyl said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4363200\/illegal-entries-arizona-plummet-60-fewer-gotaways-than-biden-years\/\">ILLEGAL ENTRIES INTO ARIZONA PLUMMET, 60% FEWER GOTAWAYS THAN IN BIDEN YEARS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several public officials, including Gov.
