A review of broadcast transcripts found CNN, MSNBc\/MS NOW and NBC News referenced Somalia or fraud topics but largely did not address the Minnesota allegations directly; Fox News, Newsmax and NewsNation covered the story more frequently. MS NOW later discussed the matter but framed it as politically charged and raised concerns about scapegoating Somalis and the politicization of federal agencies. Independent reporting and a widely viewed YouTube expos\u00e9 by Nick Shirley allege some Somali-run daycare centers received large sums despite appearing empty; Shirley&#8217;s video drew millions of views. Despite the scale of the allegations, outlets like CNN, MS NOW, and NBC News have barely covered the scandal, according to a Daily Caller News Foundation review of Grabien transcripts after Mediaite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/opinion\/cnn-and-ms-now-ignore-9-billion-industrial-scale-minnesota-fraud-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that neither CNN nor MS NOW had covered it as of Sunday.<b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A Grabien search found that while the outlets have referenced Somalia and fraud-related topics individually since Dec. 18, they have hardly addressed the Minnesota fraud allegations directly.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, a Friday broadcast of &ldquo;MS NOW Reports&rdquo; discussed President Donald Trump&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/17\/us-dramatically-escalates-air-strikes-on-somalia-under-trump-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strikes<\/a> on Somalia and a phenomenon called &ldquo;return fraud,&rdquo; but did not touch on Minnesota&rsquo;s Somali fraud scandal. Vice President J.D. Vance was posting about it the other day,&rdquo; host Jonathan Lemire said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot we don&rsquo;t know here just yet, but it gives off at least a sense. And we&rsquo;ll see where the facts take us. But at least we can safely say this: It seems like Republicans are eager to be talking about something else than a lot of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nobody-wants-a-piece-of-cnn-history\/\" title=\"Nobody Wants a Piece of ... History\">bad news surrounding<\/a> the president right now.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The question is, you know, why is this a priority in a different kind of way? The politicization of the DOJ and the FBI is undeniable. So whether they are reliable narrators is the big question,&rdquo; MS NOW analyst Mara Gay responded. &ldquo;And this is what happens when you weaponize and politicize federal agencies that are not meant to be politicized. And I think the American people are right to ask the question, well, can we trust you? And that&rsquo;s a sad thing to say as an American.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Gay also said that Somalis were &ldquo;being scapegoated in a way that certainly serves the far right.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said it was possible that half of the roughly $18 billion Minnesota has spent since 2018 on 14 Medicaid programs, especially vulnerable to abuse, may have been siphoned off by fraudsters. Somalia&rsquo;s gross domestic product was $11.97 billion in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/nbs.gov.so\/somalia-gross-domestic-product-gdp-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to a release from the country&rsquo;s National Bureau of Statistics, meaning the alleged fraud would represent nearly the country&rsquo;s entire GDP.<\/p>\n<p>YouTuber Nick Shirley also posted a video on Friday finding that multiple supposed Somali-run day care centers in Minnesota, including one that reportedly obtained $4 million in taxpayer funds, had no children inside.<\/p>\n<p>Shirley&rsquo;s 42-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nickshirleyy\/status\/2004642794862961123?%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2004642794862961123%7Ctwgr%5E0c029b5b3effcc23dc08b432065157b7f7af285e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2025%2F12%2F28%2Fyoutube-nick-shirley-exposes-minnestoa-somali-day-care-center-reaped-4000000-dollars-taxpayers-no-children%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> had over 115 million views on X as of Monday afternoon.
