Kathy Hochul for signing a prison-reform omnibus bill that expands the New York State Commission of Correction and requires one of the new seats be filled by a formerly incarcerated person. Blakeman – a leading Republican gubernatorial contender – said the additional seat should instead go to a crime victim and accused Hochul of favoring criminals over law‑abiding New Yorkers, saying the state should prioritize accountability, victims’ voices, and support for law enforcement and corrections officers. Hochul and supporters say the reforms respond to high‑profile deaths in custody, including Robert Brooks and Messiah Natwi, and strengthen oversight by funding investigations, installing fixed and body‑worn cameras, and increasing resources for the commission. Allen Riley, chair of the commission, and prison‑reform advocates praised adding a formerly incarcerated viewpoint as valuable to oversight. The correctional officers’ union opposed aspects of the measure, calling it an overbroad response that could undermine staff morale and unfairly assume guilt across the workforce.

Blakeman slams Hochul over requirement to put convicted criminal on state corrections commission

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman blasted Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) for following through on legislation that sets aside a spot on the state corrections commission for a convicted criminal.

The county executive said that the extra seat should go to a crime victim, not a criminal. Julia Salazar, praised Hochul for the legislation.

“I thank Governor Hochul for her leadership in enacting the prison reform omnibus bill. This legislative package will bring desperately needed transparency, oversight, and accountability to New York’s prisons, helping to reduce violence,” she said in the statement alongside Hochul.

New York State Commission of Correction Chair Allen Riley said adding a former inmate to the board “adds an important perspective.”

“Governor Hochul secured $2.5 million in this year’s budget, giving the Commission the personnel and resources necessary to strengthen its oversight of [Department of Corrections and Community Supervision] facilities. This package of legislation builds upon that critical investment and adds an important perspective to this work by requiring that one of the two new Commissioners is an individual who is formerly incarcerated in a correctional facility.
