Correspondent sharyn Alfonsi sent an internal message accusing weiss of spiking the story for political reasons, saying the piece had been screened multiple times, cleared by lawyers and standards and practices, and that reporters had sought comment from the Trump administration (wich she says declined to participate). Alfonsi warned that allowing refusal to comment to justify killing stories would give officials a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lets-get-our-filibuster-history-right\/\" title=\"Let\u2019s Get Our Filibuster Hi... Right\">kill switch<\/a>&#8221; over inconvenient reporting and compared the decision to CBS&#8217;s controversial decision in the 1990s to withhold the Jeffrey Wigand interview. Weiss and a CBS spokesperson defended the move, saying the story lacked sufficient context and needed additional reporting and voices, and that it will air when ready. Reporters on both sides have publicly debated the decision; some allies of Alfonsi pushed back against Weiss, while critics accused Alfonsi of trying to make herself the story. In my view, pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Alfonsi also suggested that Weiss had rejected the segment because it didn&rsquo;t contain the Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rules-against-biden-doj-in-high-stakes-jan-6-case-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Supreme Court rules against Biden DOJ in high-stakes Jan. 6 case - Washington Examiner\">administration&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s response. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gov-desantis-rips-ambulance-chasers-media-60-minutes-hit-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rogue correspondent<\/a> argued that this should nevertheless be irrelevant because the administration was indeed contacted but refused to respond.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If the administration&rsquo;s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a &lsquo;kill switch&rsquo; for any reporting they find inconvenient,&rdquo; Alfonsi wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Other establishment &ldquo;journalists&rdquo; have begun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nbc-attempts-defend-lgbt-marchers-coming-children-chant-somehow-makes-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circling the wagon<\/a> around Alfonsi:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">MORE on &ldquo;60 Minutes&rdquo; fracas:<\/p>\n<p>Among Weiss&rsquo;s suggestions was adding an interview with Stephen Miller or similar senior Trump administration official. I look forward to airing this important piece when it&rsquo;s ready,&rdquo; she added.<\/p>\n<p>A CBS News spokesperson also defended Weiss&rsquo; decision, saying, &ldquo;The 60 Minutes report on Inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fact-check-trump-administration-send-innocent-father-maryland-el-salvador-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CECOT<\/a> will air in a future broadcast.
