Just one day after his release, the suspect, Marvin Morales-Ortez, was arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal shooting in Reston. The charges had been dropped as the victim was out of the country and would not cooperate with the court proceedings. Descano&#8217;s prosecutorial decisions have drawn criticism, with some conservative commentators linking his Soros-funded campaign to lenient policies toward repeat offenders. district attorney whose campaign was funded by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/george-soros\">George Soros<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Descano, prosecutor for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fairfax-county\/\">Fairfax County<\/a>, Virginia, dropped all charges against a 23-year-old <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/illegal-immigrants\/\">illegal immigrant<\/a> from El Salvador with a criminal history, allowing the suspect to go free into the community, only to be picked up by police on a suspected murder charge a day later, local media outlet WJLA <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" that officers had arrested Marvin Morales-Ortez as the suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred outside a home in Reston earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Morales-Ortez had a long list of felony arrests in the county, but was released from jail on Tuesday after Fairfax County Commonwealth&rsquo;s Attorney&rsquo;s Office dropped the charges for brandishing a firearm and assaulting and injuring someone.<\/p>\n<p>Descano&rsquo;s campaign for his current job, the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >top law enforcement official<\/a> in a Virginia county outside Washington, was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxtimes.com\/articles\/opinions\/fairfax-s-top-prosecutor-owes-his-office-to-special-interest-money\/article_2b482c86-f898-11ec-a36c-eb5ca733b4db.html\">bankrolled<\/a> in 2019 by the Justice and Public Safety PAC, whose sole funder is George Soros.<\/p>\n<p>Soros is a billionaire who has made a name for himself by financing campaigns for progressive candidates in the United States and globally.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows at the conservative <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/heritage-foundation\/\">Heritage Foundation<\/a> think tank in Washington <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/crime-and-justice\/commentary\/meet-steve-descano-the-rogue-prosecutor-whose-policies-are-wreaking\">wrote<\/a> in 2020 that to gain the financial backing of Soros, &ldquo;rogue prosecutors such as Descano kowtow to the movement because it bankrolls their campaigns. &hellip; Once elected, they&rsquo;re expected to deliver on their promises.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Morales-Ortez was charged with assault and battery in 2020; another assault and battery charge in 2023, along with disorderly conduct; petit larceny in 2024; and pointing or brandishing a gun, assaulting, and injuring a victim in September 2025. He was only convicted of the theft.<\/p>\n<p>He was also charged with first-degree murder in 2021 and spent a year and a half in jail awaiting trial.
