While prices for some food items like pork chops, milk, eggs, and cheese decreased, others such as ground beef and steaks rose substantially. Energy costs have been mixed, with electricity prices rising but gasoline costs remaining stable. The report arrives amid ongoing concerns about the labor market, which is showing signs of slowing job growth and a slight rise in unemployment to 4.6%. The Federal Reserve, which has recently cut interest rates, regards this inflation data as encouraging, potentially allowing it to focus more on addressing labor market weakness. president Trump continues to advocate for lower interest rates and will soon have the chance to nominate the next Fed Chair.

Inflation dropped to 2.7% in November, report delayed by shutdown shows

Inflation unexpectedly dropped three-tenths of a percentage point to 2.7% for the year ending in November, according to an update to the consumer price index released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Forecasters had expected that inflation would rise to 3.1%.
