Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), who had been blocking the legislation due to concerns about the Shutdown Fairness Act-which aims to guarantee pay for federal workers during government shutdowns-lifted his hold after discussions involving Trump, Thune, and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Johnson received a commitment from Trump and GOP leaders to pursue the bill&#8217;s passage. With Ron Johnson stepping aside, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) plans to drop his hold after receiving assurances on amendments addressing earmarks and Interior Department funding. Meanwhile, Senate leaders are working to overcome potential Democratic objections to hold a procedural vote before the Christmas recess, which would set the stage for full passage in January ahead of the government&#8217;s funding deadline. Releases List of President ...\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">government funding<\/a> lapses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson got a vague commitment from the president that Republicans would try to pass the bill, according to a source familiar with the matter, while Thune also got on the phone with him and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to discuss its prospects in the House.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There have been a lot of folks involved on that one,&rdquo; Thune said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I mean, the president&rsquo;s spoken with him, I&rsquo;ve spoken with him, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tired-of-winning-not-enough-space-to-accommodate-all-of-trumps-1-million-inauguration-donors\/\" title=\"Tired of Winning? Not Enough Space to Accommodate All of ...&#039;s  Million Inauguration Donors\">speaker &#038;ndash<\/a>; I&rsquo;ve been on the phone with the speaker and Ron, so we&rsquo;ve worked through some of the concerns and issues he had, and president&rsquo;s engaged like he usually is,&rdquo; Thune added.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Johnson was the final holdout on the Republican side, with another source telling the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) planned to drop his hold once his colleague&rsquo;s concerns were resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Lee is getting two amendment votes to strip the earmarks out of the minibus, plus another amendment to adjust language in the Interior Department funding bill. Last week, Thune offered Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), the third fiscal hawk, a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3915388\/john-thune-nears-spending-deal-fiscal-hawks-christmas-recess\/\">chance to vote on the Pentagon funding bill<\/a> separate from the rest of the package.<\/p>\n<p>Attention now turns to whether Senate leaders can work through possible objections on the Democratic side, with Thune pressuring them to cooperate and allow a vote before the recess.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As of now, we&rsquo;re clear on our side, and so hopefully there are enough Democrats that want to appropriate under regular order, which is, you know, what they always say they want to do,&rdquo; Thune said.<\/p>\n<p>A vote this week would be just the first procedural step, but it would help ease the way for passage in January, when government funding is slated to run out.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3920407\/senate-passes-annual-defense-bill-trump\/\"><strong>SENATE SENDS ANNUAL DEFENSE BILL TO TRUMP&rsquo;S DESK BEFORE CHRISTMAS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sen.
