He mentioned considering former Fed governor Kevin Warsh and national Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett as potential candidates to replace Jerome Powell when his term ends next year. Trump expressed that the federal funds rate should be reduced dramatically, aiming for around 1% or even lower, to maintain the lowest rates globally. Despite his views, experts note that interest rates are resolute by the Federal Open Market Committee, a group of 12 members including the Fed chair and regional presidents, who collectively set policy. It should be done. It doesn&rsquo;t mean &mdash; I don&rsquo;t think he should do exactly what we say. But certainly we&rsquo;re &mdash; I&rsquo;m a smart voice and should be listened to.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly criticized the Fed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/recession-would-pose-worst-case-scenario-for-harris-campaign-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Recession would pose worst-case scenario for Harris campaign - Washington Examiner\">holding interest rates high<\/a> for most of 2025, with the central bank only recently starting to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3913463\/fed-cuts-interest-rate-target-but-future-uncertain-as-trump-pushes-looser-money\/\">slowly trim rates<\/a>. That is because inflation has remained too high, and the Fed&rsquo;s interest rate target is its main tool to quash inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also revealed that he would like to see the Fed&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >rate target move dramatically lower<\/a>, from 3.50% to 3.75%, down to 1% in the next year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One percent and maybe lower than that,&rdquo; he said, later adding that the United States &ldquo;should have the lowest rate in the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump also said Warsh is one of the top two candidates to become the next Fed chair and that Warsh agrees with him that interest rates should be lower.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Yes, I think he is,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;I think you have Kevin and Kevin. They&rsquo;re both &mdash; I think the two Kevins are great. I think there are a couple of other people that are great.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>No matter who occupies Powell&rsquo;s seat after his departure as Fed chairman, interest rates will almost certainly not be lowered to near the level the president is pushing for.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3915580\/french-hill-bipartisan-housing-bill-supply-affordability\/\">TOP REPUBLICAN UNVEILS BIPARTISAN HOUSING BILL TO BOOST SUPPLY AND AID AFFORDABILITY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is little the Fed chair alone can do to lower or raise interest rates without consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, that is up to a 12-person board called the Federal Open Market Committee, which consists of the Fed Board of Governors and a rotation of regional Fed presidents. The FOMC collectively decides on the course of interest rate policy.
