These criminal networks exploit Canada’s ports, financial systems, and lenient disclosure laws to traffic drugs, weapons, and people, using refined technologies and laundering money through legitimate businesses.

Certain First Nation reservations along the border, such as the Akwesasne Mohawk and Tsawwassen First Nation, are particularly affected by smuggling and organized crime. Critics blame the Canadian government’s previous focus on issues other than national security for allowing these problems to escalate. Under the Trudeau management, border security was not prioritized, coinciding with record numbers of illegal crossings and suspected terrorists at the northern border.

In response to this pressure and U.S.actions, including a national emergency declaration by former President Trump, Canada proposed a $1.3 billion plan to strengthen border security. However, Canadian groups and First Nation leaders argue that more extensive measures are needed, such as modernizing technology, reforming privacy laws for better intelligence sharing, and fully recognizing and funding First Nation police as essential to national security efforts at the border.

Canadian groups, First Nation police support stronger border security

(The Center Square) – Despite Canadian officials arguing that the “Canada-U.S. border is the best-managed and most secure border in the world,” some Canadian groups and First Nation tribal police chiefs disagree.

This week, First Nation representatives traveled to Texas for the first time in U.S.-Canadian history to find ways to implement stronger border security measures at the U.S.-Canada border, including joining an Operation Lone Star Task Force, The Center Square exclusively reported.

Recommended Stories

Trump administration ends temporary protected status for Ethiopians

FEMA meeting abruptly canceled after Noem cut congressional testimony short to attend

CA spending $278M on ‘Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants’ this year

Part of the problem is getting law enforcement, elected officials, and the general public to understand the reality that Mexican cartels and transnational criminal organizations are operating in Canada; another stems from the Trudeau administration’s visa policies, they argue.

When it comes to public perception, “If you tell Canadians we have a cartel problem, they’ll laugh at you.
